Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
Hear ya, Yolos! And your garden looks so wonderful....
Here, we were at 68 degrees at 8 am and we have a thunderstorm going that's causing the power to flicker. The next few days are supposed to set high temp records every day - lower to mid 70's.
How are y'all on the southside doing? I know you got slammed yesterday evening...

Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
I just came inside from drowning from the torrential rain. At least it is warm and wasn't so bad. Reminded me of my younger days walking barefoot in the rain along the St. Johns River in Jacksonville, Fla. I decided to brave the rain and went to the garden to pull the plastic covers over the lettuce and garlic/leeks/shallots. I really needed to protect the spinach also but I did not have a ready cut plastic cover for that bed. I am trying to keep the mulch from becoming super soggy and washing the nutrients away. For the first time since I have had this garden, the aisles have big puddles with standing water. The water seems to be draining toward the compost pile so it looks like I will have to turn the compost pile again to release some of the moisture (after the rains stop).
Doesn't look like the rain and cloudy conditions are going to change any time soon.

Glad you're not really drowning, though, Yolos!
We found out late this morning that a tornado took out DH's cousin's house last night. Thankfully no one was injured, although they had to cut out their handicapped child from his room. (Didn't have a scratch on him!) They're over towards Memphis.
So this can end any time it's ready!

The weather reports are indicating some awful weather for parts of the country. Stay safe.
Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
Going up to mom's yesterday wasn't too bad, although we ran into THICK fog on Blood Mountain.
Coming back was a different story - waves of really hard rain then down to a drizzle. Repeat. But made it home safe & sound...

Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
Watching the news, looks like you guys have had a lot of rain. Take care.
Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
Oh, yeah... Some areas received 6+ inches in a day. Thankfully we're on a nice big hill!
Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
After a tremendous amount of rain last night, woke up to mostly blue sky & sunshine!
Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
Rain, rain, rain. We also got clobbered with rain again last night. One concrete block wall in a storage are of the basement started to leak water. This used to be a problem area for us. We eventually put in underground drain spouts, gravel etc. but it just couldn't keep up with our torrential rains over the last few weeks. Ground is super saturated. We have had approx 13 inches of rain so far in the month of Dec. I am surprised that trees on our property have not fallen.
Drought, rain, drought, rain. I have decided I like the drought conditions better than the rain. I see the sun trying to peak out. The forecast shows partial sun until 11 am today. I better get out quick and harvest some spinach. My lettuce survived the few freezes we had but the rain just beat it to death. The spinach is still hanging in there.

Rain, rain, go AWAY!
In my garden, I want to play.
Clean my beds & not get wet!
But as it is... you will not let.

Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
Rainfall total was officially 15 inches in Dec. The average rainfall for Dec is 4 inches. Quite a big difference. My rain barrel that I keep for my compost pile shows more like 24 inches.
I need to go out and cut back all my lettuce to about 2 inches off the ground and hope the leaves will regrow. Of course now that the rain is over, overnight temps are predicted to go below freezing this week.
