Mid-South: November & December 2015
Goodness! I can't believe we're already this far into the year.... Today it's raining, so I'm not going to be able to work on getting stuff out of the beds. Maybe tomorrow....
In looking at my Gardenate.com reminders, November & December are the same. So I've just combined this newsletter for both months.
In looking at the Old Farmer's Almanac, we have 49 days till winter arrives. They're also saying that this winter will be colder & rainier than normal. NOAA agrees. But there's still lots to be done in the SE (which, according to OFA, includes VA, WV, KY, all states south & out to the bottom part of TX. They're also saying there's still items that we can be planting!
Here's their list of chores for December:
Mother Earth News has an interesting article about winter growing I thought I'd pass on:

Hope everyone has a great month!

Southeast Region
- Continue planting winter vegetables, such as beets, broccoli, cabbage, onions, radishes, and spinach.
- Continue planting herbs that like cooler weather, such as dill, sage, thyme, cilantro, fennel, and parsley.
- Plant cool-season flowers, such as carnations, pansies, petunias, and snapdragons.
- Now is a good time to plant ornamental trees and shrubs.
- Use dormant oil sprays to control scale on ornamental plants, trees, and shrubs.
- Protect citrus trees if freezing temperatures are predicted. Water a day prior and you may also use covers.
- Avoid any heavy pruning jobs, as they will encourage growth that may be damaged during the winter.
- Remember the birds. As you prune, make a small pile in the back of the yard for your feathered friends.
- Remember to water your lawn during dry weather to keep it healthy.
- Plant hardy annuals, such as poppies, pansies, and larkspur.
- Top-dress your perennial beds with a layer of compost.
- Be sure to water your shrubs and trees throughout the winter, especially if the weather is dry.
- Refresh the mulch around your plants to help retain moisture and control weeds.
- Remove the leaves from your lawn, as they can encourage disease.
Here's their list of chores for December:
- In some southern areas, you can still plant cool-season vegetables, such as beets, broccoli, cabbage, onions, and carrots.
- In some areas, you can still plant cool-season herbs such as parsley, thyme, sage, dill, fennel, cilantro, comfrey, and garlic.
- Take root cuttings from your cold-sensitive perennials. Plant them in pots and keep them indoors; you can use these to replace any plants that are killed during the winter.
- You can still transplant trees and shrubs.
- Check the soil moisture of your lawn throughout the winter and water when necessary.
- Don’t prune cold-damaged plants yet.
- Continue planting hardy annual seeds to add color to your winter garden: petunia, pansy, snapdragon lobelia, alyssum, and viola.
- Remember to clean the rows in your garden to help prevent insects and diseases.
- Test your soil. Now is a good time to add lime if it is necessary.
- Start inspecting houseplants regularly for pests.
- Start planning next year’s garden. Think about which crops did well and which didn’t fare well so that you can order better varieties next time. Think about the quantity of each crop and whether it was enough or too much. Assess learning before ordering seeds for next year.
- Before sending your seed order, draw a map of the garden area. This way, you’ll order the right amount of seeds.
- In empty garden beds, spread manure and compost over the garden and plow under to prepare your soil for next year.
- Add fallen leaves to your compost pile or use for mulch.
- Bring a poinsettia into your home. See Almanac.com for tips on how to keep poinsettias going strong.

Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
I started a plan for my spring garden. Looks good just need to get netting of some type to cover brassicas. I want add that you might want to recheck your frost dates. They had not been updated for 30 years. Ours here changed to April 8 and Nov 3. Our beds have yet to be frosted due to our bed location. The only cold sensitive plant I have in my mint. Move her up on top of the bed and packed leaves around the pot. I hope it makes it through the winter in the pot. I really can't move that huge thing inside with cats and a toddler. I am looking forward to next year. I mean seeds starts get started in January? That isn't to far to wait.
Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
I found that mint is very hardy. I had it in a window box thru the winter & it made it fine. No tucking in or anything - just exposed to the northeast wind.
I'm keeping track of our frost dates on my calendar. But every resource I check says pretty much the same thing right now...
Not far to wait at all! I feel like I'm already behind... lol!

Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
Good to know about the mint. In the spring she will be split four ways and half will be given to family. It is a chocolate mint which seems to be hard for my mom to keep going. This one is from a two years old plant ( was in ground first year lesson learned there). I am hoping it will do well for her.
I feel like I am always behind too. I have to do things during nap times .

Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
Certain mints can become almost invasive, sounds like this variety is a bit more finicky though! Sounds delicious also! I would think it will do just fine with minimal protection.

Oh, SR, if you like chocolate and you like mint, then you'll certainly like chocolate mint!! It even helps me stay away from chocolate, which is really saying something, lol!
Someone on here has beds of the stuff... Can't remember who... I want to say they're in FL, but I don't think it's DStack....

Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
Mmm...I have a little margin tub of chocolate mint that I've had for years outside. I don't dare let it out of it's tub because you know how they are. They'd be running around the box or yard within a couple years.
Speaking of chocolate mint, I work at not eating dairy but love coffee. I just picked up a chocolate mint coconut milk at Whole Foods last weekend to test in my coffee and it works GREAT! No coconut flavor (or I would have poured it on the the compost pile).

Chocolate mint coconut milk.... mmmMMMMMMMmmmmm even without the coconut flavor that would be good. (And, truthfully, I'm not sure how chocolate, mint, & coconut would taste anyway....)

Weather alert -
Well, the first freeze is on the way. About three weeks late so I can't complain too much.
Here are projected low temps
Saturday - 32* F
Sunday - 28* F
Monday - 30* F
Then the lows will rise a little and then drop down to 22* F the following Saturday. The only thing I want to really protect from those temps are my approx 11 beds that are 2 x 2 filled with lettuce.

Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
Looks like we MAY get frost on Saturday. Probly for sure on Sunday...
But you're right, Yolos. At least it's late this year.

Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
40 degrees this morning. Supposed to freeze tonight. So cover up your plants!
DH is winterizing the Airstream today (once it warms up a bit!). Fun, fun...
We don't have any classes this next week, so I'm HOPING/PLANNING to get into the garden to get it cleaned up from LAST fall...!

Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
If you can get the garden cleaned up now, you might feel more like planting next spring. Didn't you get some weeds growing near the fence? I have two 1' x 3' beds (okra) that have a lot of weeds because I didn't take care of the area surrounding them. I should solarize to force all the invisible seeds to sprout now. All of the elevated beds are great, just these two that I got lazy about are giving me trouble.
Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
Exactly!!
Yeah, I've got grass, weeds, & a couple of small trees growing between the beds & the fence. I'm going to pull the hen fencing out to get to them & try to block them with 6 mil plastic. But I've got to get the rest of the weeds & grass out first from the beds...
THIS time I'm covering everything with a good measure of newspaper once I'm done with a bed. Then I'll be ready to go in spring. And it will give those worms who are adventurous something to munch on during the winter.

Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
Got our first freeze last night. The a/c showed 29 when I crawled out of bed at 7:30. And the sun was already up & shining on our a/c temp gauge...
Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
Can you believe this weather. No freeze projected for the next 10 days. High temp tomorrow will be 75*F. Quite a few days with weather 10 to 15 degrees above average. Only two nights with below freezing weather in November. My lettuce is loving it and so am I because I am not having to cover them up very often.

Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
Happy December 1st, Everyone! I can't believe we're already in December......
Woke up to 53 degrees & fog today.
Supposed to get a lot of rain over the next couple of days. They've already issued a flood watch thru Wednesday. NOAA is saying we could get a couple of inches tonight!
Then the temps will drop back down into the 30's & low 40's at night. Yipee........

Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
So I've been able to get out for a couple of days & work on my mess of a garden. Then the fog moved in yesterday morning. Hopefully it will clear up at the beginning of the week so I can get back out there!
I'm finding quite a few worms. And I've found a source for leaves for the compost pile & beds. It's just a matter of getting them...
I've seen posts from Yolos & Windmere. How's everyone else's garden?

Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
Well, the weather folks said it was gonna get colder today. We'll be lucky to make it into the 50's... And the wind is blowing nicely too, so it feels like the mid to lower 40's.
Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
It got really Decembery here today. WINDY, cold, snow flurries on the drive home. Winter in Ohio. Sure has been a nice reprieve while it lasted though! The longer outlook says Christmas will be pretty warm, we will see!

Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
OH! Snow? Well, at least all we got was rain...! No thanks! You can keep the snow.
Of course, here in "the ATL," we don't get much snow. We get ice. And even though the weather folks & DOT warn everyone for DAYS to stay home, people don't do it. And then they get stuck on the expressway for 18+ hours and it's the DOT's/government's/"THEIR" fault.
And, of course, they're not prepared for getting stuck - no food, no water, no blankets, no tp. Let's HOPE that everyone learned their lessons over the last 2 years.
sigh... And the weather folks are saying it's going to be a really bad winter for the SE US. Colder & wetter than normal.
Sorry to complain. I just have to wonder at folks sometimes....
And I was right - we didn't make it to the 50's today.

Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
Marie, you are so right! I lived in Nashville for 6 years after college, and I couldn't believe how much more ICE there was there. Snow is WAY easier to deal with in a transportational way....and the whole deal where no one knows how to drive, they don't seem to realize there is a SOLID GLAZE OF ICE on the road, people!
It is actually really worse that than what we have here. Snow is easier to deal with than ice, any day. Ice hurts trees. Bad.
Yeah, the forecast is strange for all of us this year, thanks to El Nino I think!

Re: Mid-South: November & December 2015
Now if we just had some sun my various veggies would be happier. Between the rain and shorter days and the sun low over the trees, my veggies are not growing very fast. But at least they haven't succumbed to frost due to season extending efforts.
