Sanderson - Virtual Roadtrip Flyover
Here is the flyover of the first "leg" of sanderson's roadtrip of the desert and old west. This flyover begins at dawn starting at KSAC Sacramento Executive airport, then heads west along highway 50 to highway 49. It goes south on 49 to 070 Westover-Amador Co airport near Sutter Creek and Jackson CA. It then heads back north to KPVF Placerville airport and west along highway 50 to South Lake Tahoe. We fly over the south end of the lake and then turn to land at KTVL Lake Tahoe airport. I loved doing this flight ... great scenery and would like to make the trip by road someday.
Here is the route. The solid black line is the flight plan and the magenta line is the actual route that was flown.

WowWow that town is right on the edge of the lake. Hope it doesn't get flooded. Of course there could be some kind of river to let out the water if it gets any higher.

Re: Sanderson - Virtual Roadtrip Flyover
It's a huge lake at high elevation and hasn't flooded the area for a long time (4000 years) since a major earth quake created a tsunami. They historically another one is due! Bonanza was filmed on the NV (east) side, part of The Godfather and a Place in the Sun. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Tahoe#Natural_history
Re: Sanderson - Virtual Roadtrip Flyover
Here is Leg #2 of the virtual flyover for sanderson's road trip. This one starts at KTVL (Lake Tahoe - South Lake Tahoe) then follows highway 50 to Carson City then east to Fallon. We continue on to Ely and Delta. At the intersection with I15 at Holden we then turn south to land at U19 (Fillmore).

Re: Sanderson - Virtual Roadtrip Flyover
TD, Pretty accurate. Lots of nothing, only a few small towns, few pinyon and juniper trees, mountain ridges to go around. The elevation bounced around a mile high, like 3,800 in low spots to 6,400 feet. High desert. The lakes shown were very low when we drove by and did not look like they would be good to drink. At the beginning of this leg, there's a boron mine, and at Ely, there's a copper mine.
This is a graphic of various vegetation at different elevations.

Re: Sanderson - Virtual Roadtrip Flyover
Where does the time fly. The previous leg in this journey was flown in October of 2015!!!
The journey follows sandersons' "'Virtual' Roadtrip of the Desert and Old West" some of which is described in the following thread:
https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/t20010-virtual-roadtrip-of-the-desert-and-old-west?highlight=virtual+road+trip
Today we begin where we left off in 2015 when we landed at Filmore Municpal Airport (U19) in Utah and takes a zig zag route south to Cedar City Regional Airport (KCDC). We are flying in a Quest Kodiak.

Too cool, TD! Love the P-51 you have in this sim, one of my all-time favorite planes. What flight sim program are you using?

Re: Sanderson - Virtual Roadtrip Flyover
Kate ... the software is Microsoft FSX augmented with a bunch of other software such as add-on planes, scenery (scenery from ORBX and Megascenery) and a real-time weather generator, etc. The hardware includes add-on autopilot, radio panel, switch panel, yoke, pedals, throttle quadrant and head tracking device. I also have moving map software so that I can follow the plane on a map. I don't use the real-time weather for the virtual flyovers. For flying on VATSIM and with other people I have hardware (earphones & microphone) for voice communication with air traffic controllers plus some other software required to join in the fun with other pilots.

You're seriously tricked-out, that would be so fun. Some day I may have time to pursue the setup you have... thanks for sharing.

Re: Sanderson - Virtual Roadtrip Flyover
Thanks, TD. The next leg should be awesome scenery, Cedar City, UT to Page, AZ, back tracking to Zion N. P.
Re: Sanderson - Virtual Roadtrip Flyover
Actually I've already done the next leg but decided to hold off on posting it so that everything is not out in one day.sanderson wrote:Thanks, TD. The next leg should be awesome scenery, Cedar City, UT to Page, AZ, back tracking to Zion N. P.
You are right about the awesome scenery. I'm not sure the flight sim does it justice. One of the potential problems with the flight sim scenery is something called "mesh". Mesh is like a grid layer which provides the 3-dimensional contours to the scenery that is overlaid on top of it. It's what gives shape to the ground (flat, mountains, valleys, etc.). A fine mesh makes for great scenery such as jagged mountain peaks whereas a coarse mesh produces mountains that have rounded tops.

Re: Sanderson - Virtual Roadtrip Flyover
We now begin a leg of the journey that sanderson has been waiting for. We begin at Cedar City (KCDC) and go south following near to route I-15. We then turn east following close to highway 9 through Zion National Park. This leg ends at Clear Creek Ranch Airport (00UT). Tomorrow I will post a short tour flown in Zion National Park.

Re: Sanderson - Virtual Roadtrip Flyover
Here are a few photos from ground level. It's hard to capture in sim, or even in photos, the grandeur of this area.
Re: Sanderson - Virtual Roadtrip Flyover
After we arrive in Page we take some side tours which I will post later.

Re: Sanderson - Virtual Roadtrip Flyover
This one shows more of the colors present, probably because of the angle of the sun. Love it! Such an ancient land, kind of mysterious.

Re: Sanderson - Virtual Roadtrip Flyover
Here at last are the three tours originating in Page AZ. We begin with a helicopter flight to the Glen Canyon Dam near Page at the south-west end of Lake Powell. Then we take a flight east of Page for a circuit around Navajo Mountain and back over Lake Powell. Finally, we do a short float plane tour on and over Lake Powell,.
