Re: New England, October 2015
Best season of the year, IMO. Beautiful leaves above and below and the beastly summer heat is past. And where I live, fewer and fewer mosquitoes until they're gone. It's finally pleasant to sit outside again.
I always love pictures of the fall season.

Re: New England, October 2015
Just thought I'd throw in a little contrast for you.
A bit of gold and bronze. The red leaves are already turning dark because of our cold nites lately.
But in some areas the colors have barely begun, like out back by the fire pit. Leaves are still green but its so blustery, I'm sure they'll be blown off soon and the freezing cold tonite will do them in.
On my way to get the mail down our road, there is still color to be seen.
Going to be mighty cold tonite. Brrrrr, in the 20s.

Re: New England, October 2015
A friend sent me this photo up near Mt Katahdin.
That's Mt Katahdin in light gray in the distance. I just love all the colors and that broad expanse of loveliness.
This one is about a mile from her house in West Enfield Maine. Its a red maple that just gets redder every year.
We actually had a few snowflakes drifting down on our lawns this afternoon, but they melted immediately so no pictures. And its cold tonite, in the 20s. Brrrrr.

Beautiful fall photos, QB! The Cape is just coming into peak and I tell you, this is one of the best! Can't figure out why with the drought we had all summer. Wonder if that nasty winter had something to do with it...? Like the rainbow after the storm.
Beautiful day today - Hi 50's, overcast and not much wind. Mowed the first batch of leaves and started the new compost pile, harvested maters, carrots, chives, greens, a cuke and a few beets for supper & the weekly soup pot, bucket watered the SFG, planted 3 montauks my neighbor gave me during a visit this morning, did my laundry in there somewhere, started spreading compost on the perennial gardens, ate lunch and now we're heading to the beach for seaweed.
What's everyone else up to on this lovely day?

SR, Raspberries on your list for next year?
CC, What are the berries in the background. I can't tell if they are raspberries, also.

Re: New England, October 2015
Still getting raspberries. I think they must be a peak right now but since this is the first year for them, I'm not sure.
The berries in the back of the raspberries are not edible to my knowledge. I want to say they are berberis or some such but I can't remember.
One shrub has thorns and the other one doesn't.

Re: New England, October 2015
Maybe sanderson, I would need to give some serious thought to where. They get a bit unruly and need room to roam a bit. Maybe up against the south side of the house, just not sure. They almost need a wall or border situation, which I don't have much. More to ponder over the winter.....

SR, For folks in northern latitudes, winter is for Pondering what you want to try the following year. I've seen thorn-less berry bushes in a long skinny raised bed near a fence, if not up against it. Trying to remember. I think he had 2 or 3 strands of wire staked across the front of the bed
Re: New England, October 2015
Thornless, eh? Will have to see what the catalogs have! That would be nice!

After an inch of rain, remnants of Hurricane Patricia are making for a warm and blustery day - mid 60's. It's lovely to be t-shirt warm again!
Todays morning smoothie and midday salad harvest (except for the lemon):
NHG, if you're out there, I'm reading 'Stalking the Wild Asparagus' by Euell Gibbons from the library. It's about food that grows in the wild. Since most all the plants he refers to grow in NE I thought of you wanting perennials. This is a good source. We could go dig them up and bring them home.

Did you ever eat a pine tree? Many parts are edible.
