New England, October, 2019
It's now October and while today and tonight will be warm, I see some days with November-like temps!

Here are the November-like temps, but don't expect snow yet. I can't even expect flurries yet, LOL.
That's because it's the wet-kind of chilly, like a western British Columbia winter!
That means the temps don't go down much at night.

The weather's heading south pretty quickly right now. Next 2 days are windy and raining... Not fit for man nor beast. I'm ready.

We had a little repose, and have temps in the low 70s today...

We don't want showers!
The reported eastern equine virus activity is now worse! Looks like we're at peak eastern equine virus activity!
(Albeit Vermont is coming up clean, according to the Vermont department of health.)

And now, your region isn't coming up clean for the eastern equine virus! In your vicinity, mosquitoes were tested positive for that virus, IIRC!CapeCoddess wrote:The weather's heading south pretty quickly right now. Next 2 days are windy and raining... Not fit for man nor beast. I'm ready.

Sky full of vultures
The nor'easter has passed, but it's still been windy the past couple of days, and I've enjoyed watching the black vultures riding the air currents. Today especially, there were times when the sky was just full of them, rising, falling, circling. And then I was lucky enough to actually catch them landing on the power lines in front of my neighbor's house. I could see their silhouettes, their great humpy backs making them look like an old crone. They may not be beauties, but they are certainly lovely to watch in flight. I got these stills from a video I took. I had to use the telephoto, so the quality isn't great, sadly. In the last pic, where I've circled, you can just make out five of them huddled together on the wire. It was hard to count with them moving, but at one point I guesstimated 15 to 20 of them in the air. What a show!

My daughter lived up the hill, and from there the vultures were beautiful to watch as they rode the currents.

I saw sunflowers still blooming in downtown Springfield, Vermont and downtown Claremont, New Hampshire!
The ones in downtown Springfield, Vermont, are next to my former placement, 105 Main St.! I miss that house!

My cosmos are in bloom!
So this spring I found some cosmos seeds at the dollar store. They came embedded in a round, papery thing and the instructions said to cover with a thin layer of soil and keep moist. Well, I did that and nothing happened. Oh well, I thought, at least they were only a dollar. So well into the summer, I noticed this little sprout, just one, that kept getting bigger and bigger until it was taller than me. (five foot three on a good day), and just recently it began to bloom. I've been cleaning out the flower beds, and I left that one for last, but yesterday it just had to be done. The main stem was about an inch thick, and really tough, I had a tough time cutting with the hand pruner. So I saved as many blooms as I could, and there are loads of buds, and I'm hoping they may open. I'm used to having my monkshood bloom into November, but cosmos??? Anyway, I'm enjoying them on my table. It's a nice autumn surprise.
