I live in part of Africa where we have lot of animal waste, Im thinking of vermicomposting animal waste,  treated odorless sewage sludge and poultry manure. The idea is to have a complete fertilizer, will it work, please assist

Gseoka,  Welcome to the Forum from California, US (west coast)!  glad you\'re here

Cow and poultry manure are great ingredients for making compost.  If you can add some plant material (dead or green leaves, grass clippings, old vegetables and fruits, vegetable and fruit trimmings, used coffee grounds or tea leaves, straw after the wheat head has been harvested, chopped up corn stalks and leaves, etc.) you will have a well balanced compost.  Herbivore manure (such as cow and poultry) plus dead plants = balanced compost.  Worm castings (vermicomposting) are usually limited as part of the final blended blended compost.

I would stay away from human waste / sewage sludge because of the potential human diseases, medications, harsh cleaners, and other products that enter the sewage system.

If you have any photos of your garden or composting operation, please post them.  We love photos!! And please ask questions if you any. The members here are very helpful and friendly.

Thanks a lot but just a quick one, the treated sludge that is used is free of pathogens and approved according to bureau of stand in Botswana. We have a lot in abundance and it just goes to waste and it is for free

I understand. Some companies here use treated sludge in their bagged compost. It's a personal preference whether to use it or not. This is your operation and if you feel comfortable, then please use it. Will you also be adding any plant material to your compost?

Some Forum members raise worms for their worm castings. (I do) The castings are a great addition to the garden beds.

glad you\'re here  gseoka happy hi
from Kelejan :canada: from Canada

As sanderson said, add plant material for a balanced compost.  I also use powdered eggshells for calcium in addition to my own worm castings.  I have three worm bins, my worms feed on decomposed plant material, veggies and fruits.

If you put the word COMPOST in the search space at the top left of this page you will find lots of threads on making compost.

Welcome, Gseoka, from Ohio, Great Lakes, US!

I have no access or experience with sludge, so cannot comment. Manures are great additions to compost. I would do some reading in the archives on composting on this site, very helpful, and so are the members!

glad you\'re here
