"Blended" Compost
So I've been looking for a larger selection of compost I came across a "blended" compost at a local nursery (one I shop fairly regularly for hydroponic supplies) that was listed as perfect for making SFG Mix (not Mel's Mix tho the recipe on the bag was his). Now I wanted to know what was in it so I kept asking and finally got tossed to the guy who makes it (after about 30 minuets in the store), He said, "Its a blend of all of last years plants and finely ground tree bark."
Long story short I didn't buy it but it goes to show you be careful of whats advertised, and they sell a lot of the mix to people new to ANSFG, which saddens me because I doubt the neutrients in that compost are anywhere near enough to support the plants for long.
Anyone else seen anything like this happening?

Re: "Blended" Compost
That is a great tip. It is sad when newbees are taken advantage of. Were it not for the tree bark I would say that it would be great to use as 1 part of a 5 part mix but it sounds like they were saying you could use just their compost for the mix. I agree with you I don't think that would work all that well.

Sadly not only were they saying that it was the only one you needed but they were selling it as such with a SFG pamphlet!
I did end up going to another nursery who had an ANSFG Teacher (who is a master gardener for the area too) and he gave me the blend he and his wife use at home, cost only 6 dollars more for 2cf of compost (well it will be after I blend it all).
Mostly I wanted to warn that this is happening and if your new like me it sounds like a great deal to get it pre-blended but some times too good to be true is

I wonder if this is something you may want to pass along to Alan or Victoria. It's not right that they are attaching the SFG name with this crap they're selling.
Giving them the benefit of the doubt, they might actually THINK they're doing good and providing a service.

I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

I don't know who Alan or Victoria are.
But the pamphlet reads : Blended Compost 6cu ft. no need to use 5 types. Also in reading this I wonder if its the old SFG book because they have a 4 part "soil" If anyone knows the old book and can tell if these ingredients are for it please let me know:
Vermiculite
Compost
Peat Moss
Soil Activator Humates
Never used the last one and don't know exactly what it is...
James
PS. It does list Mel's name on the pamphlet and claims the website now says to use a "well blended compost" in stead of 5 types (yea that's right off the sheet)
