Lower South August
Hey all its August. Where has the time gone. This month if your planning on a fall garden now is the time to start those seeds. And getting your squares ready. As for my garden I'm not going to be having a fall garden due to the fact ill be moving later this year. My summer plants are still going strong. I have cucumbers still producing, pumpkins, sunflowers, and marigolds. Hope your gardens are growing well.

Bummer that you can't take tem with you. Maybe some container gardening will fill the need to grow.

Re: Lower South August
Can you take some MM with you for the containers? Keep you "in touch" with SFG?
Re: Lower South August
Thanks all for the thought but last time I moved, about 1 1/2 years ago, hubby didn't like the idea of pots coming in the car with us since moving companies don't move soil. Maybe once we get settled I can figure out a community garden or get pots.

Line your hope chest with plastic and fill it with MM. No one but you will know.

Re: Lower South August
Or like Walshavek did with her vermiculite. Used it as packing material in the boxes.
Re: Lower South August
Ya'll are great at making me smile. I would love to utilize these ideas and so would if the moving company didn't have to check what's in each boxes before sealing it or they want insure it or move it. Oh well...I also just found out we will be in an apartment for the next year at least. I like having a big garden and yard. Oh well its for the best.
Now my garden update... yesterday and today I found two Hugh tomatoes horn worms/ caterpillars eating my tomatoes. My cucumbers are dead dead and not going to make it. On a good note my basil is making a come back. Sunflowers and pumpkins are growing nice and tall. Two boxes that were heading out, they were 5 years old, got taken out so sod can be laid. All in all doing good here. How's everyone else's garden growing?

Re: Lower South August
Well I got nothing out of my summer garden, so I started seeds today for my fall/winter garden. Spinach, chard, collards and kale. I have them in my new she-shed with the a/c. I learned spinach will not germinate in the heat we have been having. Also want to start some bok choy and chinese cabbage but need more seed starting mix.
I'm trying to dig the weeds out of the pond beds for winter greens. I need to keep the peat content high for the wicking to work so will be adding more than just compost to the beds. All the citrus trees will go into the greenhouses, but I can put plastic over the pond beds for extended season. Lettuce will go into cement mixing tubs closer to the house

Wholly mackerel I'm jealous too and I'm not a she!
That's one nice gardening shed. Hope your seeds & plants appreciate all the effort that went into it.

Re: Lower South August
My cousin called it my *itch barn. I also plan to keep all my canning equipment out there and store what I can. Maybe next year as I got nothing to can this year. The idea is that since I lost my garage when I moved, I needed space to put things that cannot freeze or overheat. They don't need to be comfortable just above 40 and under 80. The only storage space in the house is in the attic and I couldn't use that and the Rubbermaid sheds were out also. That left the wooden barn which had one side partially burned. (Grandson let a leaf fire get away from him a few years ago.) The little window was a sample window a dealer gave my contractor and is not manufactured that small and the flooring was not a planned item, but in the end it is a needed climate controlled space.

Re: Lower South August
That climate control is a neat thing. We lost a bunch of paint this year because over the winter, it froze and that made it impossible to mix properly afterward. There was even a warning about that on the paint can, but we didn't see it because it was covered in paint.

Yep, paint is headed for this area. Also neem, bt, and copper fungicide. And the worm bins. I harvested castings on Wed morning and put the bin in the shed.Marc Iverson wrote:That climate control is a neat thing. It looks really nice, Kay! Wish I had something that large...
Mschaef - are you still going to be in the Atlanta area?

Re: Lower South August
No I'm will not be staying in the south we are going back west. I think I should be the traveling regional host not assigned to a certain region since I keep moving. Lol. I have live in Nebraska, North Carolina, Montana, and Georgia since joining the forum in 2007. We are looking at going to Colorado for numerous reasons but I truly think it will depend on if my hubby gets a job or decided to go back to school. He keeps going back and forth about what he wants to due and we have til December to figure it out so no rush right. I'll keep ya'll post here about were I'm heading and when ill be off line.

Re: Lower South August
It rained here tonight!!!! We were getting cracks in the back yard. My tomatoes are getting black spots on the stems and leaves. Not to sure what is going on with them. Hoping its nothing serious. Time to go do some research...
