Neat idea. When that sort of thing works, it can make for a very beautiful area. I wonder if you'll have to embiggen that hole sometime in the future, though.

Cutting a bigger hole is not a problem if I had to do that in a few years. But I grew up in Southern California, and don't recall a citrus trunk expanding in diameter rapidly.  I'm sure the deck will have to be rebuilt before it gets that big.  

Good news and bad news:

The tree has vigorous new growth and yesterday I picked off a few blossom buds because I want it to focus on the new growth. I think it may need to mature a bit more before producing quality fruit. I'm just glad that it transplanted well!

The bad news, I've been reading up on citrus diseases and this citrus greening is very concerning! My neighbor across the street has a number of very unproductive citrus trees and the leaves have a lot of yellowing, which is what greening does. BTW, who named this disease and why would they call it greening when it should be called yellowing! But I digress.

This neighbor says the whole neighborhood has what his tree has! Our extension office says there's no known cure. Although there's a product at www.citrusgreeningsolution.com that supposedly brings the tree's productivity back to normal. Has anyone tried this?

I know the vector for this malicious bacterial infection is caused by a bug called psyllid. How awful!

Is your tree infected? I was thinking of you as I researched this. I have a lemon tree that I started from an organic store bought fruit, and soon will have a lime that I will keep on our screened patio.

I hope your tree isn't infected, and I'd really like to know if someone has had success with this product that I mentioned.

 That is the first I have heard of this disease in Cal. Really sad to see it has arrived but with the global economy it was only a matter of time. I lost my Honeybell to it a few years back.
I saw a article where they are tenting the trees in plastic for a day to raise the temp and it beats back the disease. I will see if I can find that for you.
 What really made it sink in is when I spoke with the County Extension Agent about it. His recommendation was any fruit tree other than citrus. Really bummed me on that one.

I don't think it is infected. It seems it is still in So. Cal. Fingers crossed for both of us.
