I promised more pictures of my potato bed and I am a man of my word...
Here they are almost all 80 are up through the ground.

At the end of the season, I would love to know if you think 4 per square was appropriate. As Sanderson said, impressive.

Ditto- Very Nice.
Love the counter weighted grid!
Does the top lift off or can you just swing the sides up?

There is no top, all open, two sides can be removed easily for servicing. I may need to add covering depending on bugs.

6 days after the last pictures of this bed, I'm satisfied how the above is growing, just hope the below is doing as well.

Amazing! Is this your first time with taters, Jimmy? Are you going to build up the MM as they get taller?

I will add a small amount, these yukon golds (which is the only one my wife uses) do not grow up. They stay under.

I did not know that. Thanks for the info. They are my faves also, along with Red Bliss.

Re: potato's planted
Here is a very good overall potato growing article. I believe it relates more to a southern gardener but many ideas would relate to all climates.

Re: potato's planted
I STILL haven't planted my potatoes!
I'm daunted by the idea of emptying my 2' x 4' x 12", adding a couple of inches of 5-way compost, planting, adding a couple more inches of compost--what with my aching arthritic finger.
Think I should cheat, and just mix in the compost with the existing old MM?

Re: potato's planted
That is all I do, plus a bit of bonemeal, that is perfect fertilizer for potatoes. Just make sure the compost is fully finished. You could put some MM in buckets for later hilling with, or just add mulch as needed. Was this bed in potatoes last year by any chance? That would up your chances of blight, but if you used certified seed last year and this year you should be ok.

Re: potato's planted
I don't have enough homemade compost to do it that way, but I'm gradually making 5-way compost instead.
Yes, I used these beds for potatoes last year, but I always buy certified seed potatoes, except for the ones I re-plant the following year.

Re: potato's planted
I have 20 squares with a total of 80 seeds set, they grew nicely and appeared to flourish.
Whats happening below ? now I'm finding out..I am digging up potatos in the squares as we use them.
Most are these sizes, a few are small and smaller.
Larger than a baseball, not as large as a softball, they are delicious.
So far no pockets, or marks, all colored nicely and delicious as I love to eat raw potato's.
This was all grown in 8 inches of Mel's Mix.

Re: potato's planted
Those are remarkably smooth, jimmycee. I can't recall ever previously seeing potatoes without all sorts of bumps and depressions in them. I guess that's a good thing? Gotta make it so much easier to peel them.
