When should seed potatoes (which will be planted mid-May), be purchased?

Kinda hard to say... If the store gets a lot of turnover, I'd say the later, the better. But realistically, is that going to happen?

You can keep them in a COOL, dry place till ready to plant.

Buy them in April and chit them.

My only concern with waiting too long would be if they're sold out. I've experienced that a couple of times Sad

Last year I got them at the local nursery. They got them in at potato planting time for our region (May). This year I ordered them from Johhny's and they will not send them until April. I will put them in a cool dry dark place to wait. Mail order business are pretty good about not sending potatoes until they are sure the potatoes will not freeze in shipping.
