Grape tomatoes - Do you have a favorite?
My wife just requested that I plant grape tomatoes this year. Does anyone have a favorite? I'd appreciate being steered in the right direction. I've been looking at Johnny's Selected Seeds and I noticed the "Five Star Grape." Right now it's looking like a front runner...

Super Sweet 100.
The name says it all. They do live up to it.
A little bigger than the "grape" 'mater tho.
And the plant is extremely vigorous. Mine dominates
a 4x4x5ft high trellised plot. I didn't think that it needed
pruning until too late.
I have been harvesting these for 3 weeks now. With no
end in sight ... 'til a killing freeze anyway.

Re: Grape tomatoes - Do you have a favorite?
Thank you for your responses Karl and Llamma Momma. I actually purchased Supersweet 100 before my wife even asked me to plant grape tomatoes. I will definitely be planting Supersweets this year. Despite that, my wife is really wanting the size and shape of a grape tomato in her salads.
This year I will be planting:
Mountain Magic
Mountain Merit
Supersweet 100
and
Per my wife and daughter's request:
Tigerella
Kumato
Sungold
.... a grape tomato yet to be determined

I grew Juliett Hybrid last year. It was the one that was recommended by the Fayette Co guy who gave the lecture last year. It was the last tomato plant standing in my garden this past year. Grew hugh. Taste was good for me but likes differ so much on taste I don't want to recommend it on taste alone.

Re: Grape tomatoes - Do you have a favorite?
I have to jump on the sweet 100's wagon. We do not grow them every year, but we have planted 5 across one of our boxes. one close to each side and one at each foot mark for 5 across. Those things went to making like bunches of grapes 2 across in long strings and we picked lots and lots they do very well in our box for some reason when other varieties do not.
And the winner is....
Thanks everyone for your input. Wow, what a resounding recommendation for the Supersweet! I can't wait to work with that one.
Yolos, I actually thought of Juliet as soon as my wife made her request. Our neighbor down the street had marvelous success with that type last year. He frequently brought us some. We did enjoy them very much. However, my wife she wants something about the size of an average grape, not quite so big. She is very particular about this!
Well, I've been doing some research off and on and I finally made a decision. I found something that is described as "like small Juliets." It called the Honey Bunch Red Grape. I realize I am taking a risk trying something I've don't know too much about... but isn't that half the fun? I ordered mine from Fedco Seeds. It's supposed to be tolerant to EB... so that's a plus!

I've grown the super sweet 100's and sun golds. Both grew great for me all season long and tasted great. I would say the sun golds won me over however with flavor, but neither would disappoint!

I am my gardens worst enemy.

RoOsTeR, my wife completely agrees with you (and me too). My wife is already pining for them... their sweetness won over my wife too. Hopefully we will have a good crop this season.RoOsTeR wrote:I've grown the super sweet 100's and sun golds. Both grew great for me all season long and tasted great. I've had good luck with St. Nick grape tomatoes here in Maryland. They are small, and they grow in bunches similar to grapes.

St. Nick Tomatoes - Where are they sold?
Hi Mikesgardn, Thanks for your comment. I can't find St. Nick grape tomatoes from any vendor (I tried Baker's Seeds, Totally Tomatoes, Johnny's Seeds, Amazon, Territorial Seeds....). Where do you get yours?Mikesgardn wrote:I've had good luck with St. Nick grape tomatoes here in Maryland. They are small, and they grow in bunches similar to grapes.

I don't have the time or space to grow my own transplants. I bought St. Nick transplants at my local greenhouse. That's a shame that you can't find them, they did very well for me.Windmere wrote:Hi Mikesgardn, Thanks for your comment. Try several different shapes, colors and variety. I get a selection every year from Annie's Heirloom seeds and also plant some super sweets.
Cut in half and mixed with larger wedged heirlooms they make for a beautiful and tasty Caprese salad

I have enjoyed sungold tomatoes in the past and I am going to grow them this year.
They are super sweet and golden. Enjoy!

Wow, what wonderful selections you all have tried! I have never heard of the chocolate cherry R&R. So many tomatoes, so little room. Based on some of the suggestions here, and with others that I've seen here and there, I think my variety count is now about 13.
Thanks everyone.
