EU to ban heirloom seeds
What's your thought on this headline? Especially Plantoid's knowledge about the debate. Here's one of the articles I read. http://www.thedailysheeple.com/european-commission-to-ban-heirloom-seeds-and-criminalize-plants-seeds-not-registered-with-government_062013 Can't wait to see an article in Mother Earth News about this. Should be a rabble rouser, what? Nonna

Re: EU to ban heirloom seeds
This article was dated 7 June 2013. Is it still relevant?
I hope it does not come to pass and that people will fight it tooth and nail.
(As an aside, I now have 2000 posts. I wonder how much hot air I have written. )

Re: EU to ban heirloom seeds
Article says it's due to go into effect 2016, and that home gardeners are fighting it, as are small market gardeners. Here's another article: http://www.collective-evolution.com/2013/06/05/european-commission-to-criminalize-seeds-and-plants-not-registered-with-the-government/ My concern is that the huge commercial seed companies here will try to make such a deal with the government. Think GMO-labeling and the massive amounts of money spent by Monsanto, etc. to fight labeling. And do you remember 15 years ago when there were dozens of heirloom corn seeds listed in most seed catalogues? Today it's hard to fine even one dozen because of GMO-contamination. And remember, in Florida the tomato regulations for export to the East Coast stipulates what commercial tomatoes must look like, but says nothing about taste and/or nutrition. Nonna

Re: EU to ban heirloom seeds
Stuff them ..Nonna , with cacti & red hot chilli's ,
Take your own seeds and get your friends to do the same .
Though I think you will find that the EU thing is meant for commercial seeds ......at present .
I'll do a bit of checking with a seed exchange club I belong to in the next few days or so & see what they say about it all . It did raise it's ugly head to us about about two years ago but was found to not be applicable to us .

But, we have to watch those politicians who fill their campaign coffers with Big Business money. On this side of the Pond, folks are just now finding out how promises about Obama Care were just....uh, not true. But the rush to pass the legislation left no reasonable chance to read the massive bill and see just how it would really impact us. Fraid I just don't trust politicians. We can't even insist that GMO-altered foods need to be labeled! Nonna, who is now putting away her soapbox.

Re: EU to ban heirloom seeds
Thank you, Camprn, for the updated article on the EU heirloom seed controversy. Wow! The home farmer really can make a difference. It behooves us to carefully monitor agriculture legislation here too. Because the above-mentioned article came through a seed company, The Real Seed Catalogue, it enticed me to check out some seed offerings by this company. And, because Western Oregon's weather has been compared to that of some parts of the UK, the chili pepper offerings were of particular interest. Hmmmm, wonder if they ship out of country? Nonna
