Oct in the Lower South

My kale and collards that looked like swiss cheese are making a comeback and the swiss chard that I planted last spring and only grew a few inches is suddenly taking off.  The volunteer tomatoes in the compost piles are spread out all over the lawn and producing cherries and a purple heirloom.  The pepper plants are still producing so guess I'll leave them till frost.  Some onions and carrots are still available.  

However, I'm ready to put the garden to bed, so I'll just pull everything during the month. I'm not planting a fall garden but I'll bet a lot of you are starting to get a harvest from a fall garden.

Planting garlic at the end of the month.

Purchased 4 bales of straw yesterday.  One is for the strawberry and garlic beds.  The other three I'm going to put against the south side of the house and make a windbreak area that I hope will keep the roots of some potted plants alive if the winter is as cold as last year.  Fig bushes, a pomegranate bush, rosemary, chives, parsley, a bay laurel tree - all usually hardy or semi hardy in my zone.  The bay laurel is the only iffy one and the nursery said if well protected on a south side they usually survive.  All the citrus trees will come inside and a few flower plants.

I am still planting plants here in Southwest Ms. I have my first fall garden planted. I have more things to plant because Im insane. I bought 240 onion bulbs I have onions year round with my Egyption walking onions so that helps. The shoots are amazing. I do plan on sharing more pics as I go, but the days are busier now than ever.
I did get a nice amount of sweet potatoes, they are one I love planting. Sweet potatoes can be left alone and still give a nice harvest. I am thinking of using that bed for some of the onions and dispersing the onions through out the beds.
Before I did my intro post I came here to find out how to space my brussel sprouts and came across Camprns gorgeous as ever plot LOL

I will post more and pics as soon as I figure out the easiest way to share for me again

I planted some leaf lettuce and already had a couple of salads from it but not sure how they will do in the cooler weather but they did withstand the crazy snow we just had. I planted some broccoli, cabbage and some onions. I will be planting garlic. I have 12 empty squares any suggestions? I will post a pic of my garden on the SFG Foundation Facebook page cause I can't figure this one out.

Garlic, bok choy? Maybe some one in your area will have some suggestions.
