Lower South Its May!!!
Hello all, how are the gardens growing?
I went out and helped my mother in law plant her boxes today. She uses the concept of SFG but doesn't follow the square planting chart. For instant today we took a 4 x 4 and planted half with green beans in 3 rows. The other half she wanted 2 tomatoes and 2 peppers.
to each their own right.
My box to growing well. Everything has sprouted and is growing great. I did have a random tomato plant sprig up and moved it today. My peas are also blooming constantly, still waiting to get the first pea though.

Its looks like the vine is flat near the ground. Could it have gotten squashed some how or broken? Just curious...
I love your greens you picked they look really yummy. We just have kale and spinach left growing.

That's what it looks like to me. A weak hydrogen peroxide spray is supposed to help this or watering with weak tea. Someone on the forum makes a second cup of tea with her tea bag and sprays/waters with that.sanderson wrote:Is this what is called "dampening off?"

Damping off
Thanks for the heads up about Damping off, I think I have lost 3 of my 4 cukes to this. Since I don't want to hi-jack this thread on Damping off, I will just say I will search the forum for a thread about it or start one on it.
Now for the good news...my lettuce, swiss chard, pole beans, etc are all doing well. I posted the picture of my harvest from May 2 above and in a week, everything shot up a ton:
Pole beans from seeds are starting to take off:
Cherry tomato plants doing well...so far:
Zuchinni growing nicely:
The chard grew more and bigger:
And here's another cherry tomato between tons of buttercrunch lettuce:
AND NOW HARVEST #2
A bunch of swiss chard, buttercrunch lettuce and red sail lettuce...All will be enjoyed tonight on our table for Mother's day:
Alright my fellow Lower South SFG'ers, I showed you mine...you know the rest

Re: Lower South Its May!!!
My tomatoes from seeds are growing bigger every day. My pumpkins, cucumbers, squash, and zucchini are all blooming. My peas are getting fatter just wish they would go fasters. Carrots are about two weeks out til harvest. Now I need to figure out to take pictures with my tablet and post them.

Re: Lower South Its May!!!

the top picture has our pumpkins, carrots, corn, bush beans, sunflowers, tomatoes and cucumbers. The carrots are getting pulled in about a week.
The bottom picture is our three sister garden we have zucchini on one half and squash on the other side with corn in the middle. Going to plant our trellis beans to grow up the corn soon.
Just a side note: I figured out how to take pictures and post them from my tablet without having to ask for help. Yea me!!!

Yea you is right! I use my tablet a lot for that also. Once you know how to do it it's a piece of cake. Have you figured out how to use the voice feature to speak your posts instead of typing them yet? It's really funny to see what types out.mschaef wrote:

Your garden is absolutely stellar! Makes my mouth water just looking at all the photos. Every
thing is so huge and thick and lush. Well done!

Re: Lower South Its May!!!
Those carrots look great! I have never grown any (have some planted now) so I was shocked to see how tall the greens were.
Here is the only thing I have been able to harvest so far other than lettuce (which has started to bolt):
I have been focussing on building the structure as opposed to planting but I did manage to get some seeds in and they are starting to come up: more pole beans, sugar peas, pumpkin. The cherry tomato plants have lots of tomatoes but not ready yet. I have some swiss chard ready to harvest but I have to wait another week because I put Sevin Dust on to get rid of the kudzu bugs, fire ants, etc and then realized I have to wait 2 weeks to harvest the leaf veggies.
anyway, here's a shot of the overall area so you can see all the green growth:

Also wondering if anyone in the region has suggested dates that they plant their fall crops. AND what crops do y'all plant?
