Poor Turan started a post and the peppers highjacked it!  Embarassed

Let's see if I can remember what was in that other thread.  Shading peppers from sun scald.  I was surprised how well the 13 pepper plants did under the sun shade.  They are still blooming and where they are, there is hardly any sunshine as we move into Fall.

They are in 8, 10 and 12" pots.  Some are first year, some were over wintered in the green house.  I didn't up pot or take the 2nd year ones out of their pots.  I just cut out a circular wedge of MM and replaced with compost to start off the spring.  I bet they are really root bound.

Marc, any special variety of banana peppers? I have seeds from Audrey and I would like to also add banana pepper as 2 new plants to try next spring.

No, unfortunately. I got them from a nursery which sells some random percentage of its plants without real identifiers, like "red cabbage," or with partial identifiers that clue you in just a bit beyond the bleeding obvious, like "winter lettuce," but go no further. "Banana Pepper" was all I got.

I think sun scald has not been my problem yet.  I'll get that next Mad
I remember other people saying that peppers really like a bit of root crowding.  Maybe I can fit 3 plants into my 30" X 9" planters.   I think growing hte plants for multiple years is probably the best thing.  If I could do that successfully.  I like what you have there, Sanderson.

Turan, but I'm not sure what you like that I have, but I thank you. Just for general information, the peppers lost their leaves over winter in the green house. I can't remember when I topped them but some time during the green house days. Then I saw the little buds in the early spring and got all excited that they lived! I don't know if they will survive a second winter but I am going to try it. I think your 30" x 9" will work if it's deep.

Marc, I also bought some "red" cabbage and "green" cabbage seedlings! Baker doesn't carry "banana" peppers.

Does anyone recognize the name for a banana pepper in the Baker catalog??

Crowded Peppers highjacked Empty Banana Peppers

Post  Turan 10/9/2014, 12:24 pm

I liked your pictures of year old peppers getting a bonsai treatment and then off for another year.  Jealous even Laughing

I have been reading over in e-how Laughing
Banana peppers are Yellow Wax peppers are Hungarian peppers etc.  Seems there are hot varieties and mild varieties and they all have an underlying sweetness.  They sound a lot like the Bull's Horn peppers grown through out the Mediterranean basin.  I happen to love the flavor in these and grew 2 types this year and am a bit bummed that I smothered them with 8' tall tomatoes......
So, Sanderson, search Baker for non bell sweet peppers.  Corno di Toro is the Italian.  I grew Crimson, which is a hybrid and Syrian 3 sided.  Really I want to grow one of each variety, a dozen or so........

I also learned there is a hybrid sweet banana pepper sold under that name by Bonnie.  My guess is that is what Marc had.  I am finding a few other varietys on the sweet side, Bananarama, Sweet spot

O, here is one I must grow next year!  Beaver Dam Pepper

Turan, Thanks for help on Banana Peppers.

I was nervous about 'topping' peppers but thought I would try it on these green house over-wintered ones. Just like everyone was saying about topping, they branch out and have more fruit. I topped the new seedlings this spring and they produced better for their first year than my original first years that weren't topped.

They also have the Beaver Dam pepper over at seedsavers.org, and lots of peppers that look like the banana peppers I grew, but nothing specifically called banana pepper. The nursery I got them at doesn't get Bonnie's plants.

P.S.: I notice seedsavers is having some of their seeds 50% off.
