I have not been able to grow anything from seed all summer.
I have built a box and put black plastic on the bottom because we have a lot of gophers.... I started it last summer and got a good fall harvest.... but this spring when I plant seeds, they come up and last about a week and then something is eating the seedllings. I tried a plate of beer but didn't any slugs or snails. I have a fence around it. but still have problems. Ginny

Sometimes birds do that too. Some people will cover seedlings to protect against that, and take the cover off when the plant is bigger.

Ginny, Welcome to the Forum from Fresno, CA! Please tell us a little more about more about your gardening in the Home page "Introduce Yourself." And don't be shy about posting photos.

Welcome, Ginny! Mark's right; birds (particularly House Finches) are abundant and hungry in the spring and in the fall. Before I started using row covers and bird netting, they'd pick all the foliage clean from my spring seedlings, then show back up in the fall to strip all the pole beans, chard, kale, cucumbers, and wipe out the strawberries . Row covers and Dollar store rubber snakes will keep them away. It is hard to believe that our gardens are being attacked from the air and from underground as well. It's a challenge to stay ahead of the pests, but far more rewarding than handing your wallet (or purse) over to the checkers at Whole Foods.
