snip the extra plants after they sprout? I'm just curious. I usually wait till all of them sprout, then snip all but the largest one. I don't usually wait for the true leaves to do this. When do you usually snip? Very Happy

When they big enough that I'm forced to make the decision! I hate to snip #2 or #3.  Sad

After true leaves emerge

+1.  Sometimes I can't bare to thin them out.  Case in point are my rattlesnake beans.  Rather than thin them out I just built new trellises.

My pepper seedlings were so good this year that I couldn't bring myself to snip. I left both to grow, then planted both together as if they were one in their place in the box. So far, so good!

When do you... Empty Tough call

I HATE thinning out seedlings.  I did it ruthlessly this season though.  However, in an experience similar to GooseGirl's, I have two Anaheim chiles growing side-by-side and they are growing fine (and producing bountifully).

Happy to know I'm not the only one who cringes when they thin.  This is the reason I usually don't wait for the first true leaves.  If they get that far, I have a harder time snipping.  Laughing
