Vacation Time
Of all the times to go on vacation this may be the worst. My tomatoes are turning red and yellow, I have many tiny cuc's, my first melon in several years, two eggplants, the biggest peppers ever and several squashes just starting. I have my pet sitter for watering every other day (I left detailed instructions, I hope they follow) but no one to fiddle with the vines, no one to murder the squash bugs, no one to pick the tomatoes, no one to thump pepper flowers or secure the plants. I am going to spend the whole time thinking about how many squash bugs will there be when I get back or how much more will the grasshoppers eat. I know we are going to a great place that is really popular to visit my son, wife and three grand daughters (1,6& 7) who we love dearly. But this time of year. My wife has a piece in a big show in Providence RI and our friend also has several pieces in the show so we have to go and see the show and go to a reception as I stand around with hands in my pockets staring blankly into space. Of course there are many pluses, the first being the grand daughters the second being fresh seafood every day. I'll have to go sailing (racing) several times in past America's cup boats which is great fun but I'm to old to do anything else but drive. I can still read the wind fairly well so we will probably win most of the time. Still thinking about squash bugs.

Re: Vacation Time
I can sympathize with you John....as my vacation gets closer I too am concerned about how the garden will fare while I'm away. Seems a lot of the garden will start producing when I'm off enjoying the Northeast Kingdom. I find the closer I get to my destination in the mountains the less I think about the garden. Its always somewhere in the back of my mind, but vacation only comes one week a year for me and I mean to really make the most of it! Enjoy your vacation and your garden will be ready and waiting for you when you get home. That is my plan anyways. Happy sailing!!!!!!

Re: Vacation Time
I'm leaving at weeks end myself. I thought about it & I'm going to leave my garden in GODS hands
I'm hoping He will see fit to place some large flounder/rockfish & clams in my hands while I'm away!
I'm also hoping He will see fit to give us some Grand babies soon!
Worrying about my garden wont add a single vegetable too it!

Re: Vacation Time
johnp, think of the worst thing that can happen. Then put it out of your mind because there isn't a thing you can do about it except pick up the pieces and start again.
Meanwhile, live in the moment.

Re: Vacation Time
Yes, John! Forget the bugs, they'll always be there. Your granddaughters will only be 1, 6 and 7 once. There will, however, ALWAYS be squash bugs and aphids and slugs and (you get the picture). Enjoy your vacation!
LOL! You can come up and weed and hunt for bugs in MY garden if you need a fix! Except that the NEK is in Vermont and I'm in NH...not too far from the border, though...

Re: Vacation Time
DH and I are taking a mini-cruise (our first) with his son and 2 granddaughters from Las Vegas. Long Beach to Catalina Island to Ensenada, Mexico, and back. I'm sure I will fret for the first couple of hours, then slowly forget about the garden.
Re: Vacation Time
Thanks Mollyhespra, I'll call ahead and make reservations for garden time.

Re: Vacation Time
I survived!! Had a great time and never thought about the garden until we were
on the way back. Five hour lay over in D.C. can get the mind wandering. Got home after dark so I put the headlight on and walked the upper garden. Lost My only Hopi Squash for unknown reasons but totally dead. Other than more grasshopper damage and the dead squash the rest looks ok.
Took a million pictures but I will only post one of my sons new hires. His first female winch grinder checking out her post. You can guess the rest.

We always agonize over vacation time
I hate going on vacation in the summer. It seems it is a good idea until the reality that I've put so much work into the garden and now....we leave it in the hands of less than able caregivers.
This is the first year in YEARS we've not taken a summer vacation. I think I'm convincing the husband that it is a good idea to stay home during growing/harvesting months.

Re: Vacation Time
Hey John,
I completely understand your feelings about leaving your garden. I had to be away for just three days, and I made sure I had a neighbor who could water for me.
However, when vacation opportunities arise... I'm GONE.
I'm glad you had a good time, and welcome back!

Re: Vacation Time
My son and family are also SFG, if fact he was the one that told me about MM and got me started with the old book. Then he told me about the All new SFG book when it came out and of course that's what we are both doing now. I was going to post a picture of his garden but instead one post showing his new first female grinder crew for the boat. She is getting acquainted with her position.

Re: Vacation Time
Yep, that what happens. For 2 summers I got a call for work. Left the garden for 2 1/2 months each time. You do what the timing dictates.Windmere wrote:Hey John,
