AAARRRGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!

Mildew on the squash leaves & aphids on the beans!

I'm cutting every leaf that even HINTS of the mildew.  And I THINK I got all of the aphids.  Of course, the ants are tending them...

But I have baby yellow watermelons!

I have aphids but only on the pink eye purple hull peas.  They have not touched anything else.  Last year they got the Chinese noodle beans.  I think they prefer the long slender straight beans/peas (at least in my garden).

Yolos - Really...?  These aphids were on my purple hull cowpeas too!  Hmmmm....  And I haven't seen them elsewhere either.

Marc - Yellow watermelon is wonderful!  You should try some if you get the chance.

Maybe next year we should plant the PEPH peas way away from the garden.  Maybe the ants will head for the peas and take the aphids with them.

Post  AtlantaMarie 4/4/2016, 10:15 pm

Okay, so all of the above was from 2014. Didn't post any pics from last year because it was a disaster! But I'm finally getting some time to play in the garden, so I'm bringing this back up.

Have to brag on DH. (For those of you who don't know our lingo, DH is Dear Husband. DW = Dear Wife, etc.)

Yesterday I was cutting the grass & when I got up by the house, he had built me a sifter box for my MM! It's 2' square with 1/4" metal grid. Does a GREAT job sifting & getting mulch & roots out. Found a couple of baby wormmies too! :-) Got the worm tube in one bed with more ready to be inserted.

I've got all of the plants outside. They're either going to make it or I'm going to start over. I WILL pull them in for the night the weather guy is saying it will be in the 30's. But that's it.

I've got the weekend off, so I'm hoping to spend MOST of the time outside getting my Vit D & getting stuff planted.

Wonderful that you are going to get some time off to play in the garden. You know what that means. . . Pho-tos, pho-tos!  Hey,  I showed my winter ugly garden.

Post  AtlantaMarie 4/22/2016, 4:48 pm

DH surprised me today. He found pressure-treated 2x4x9' for $2.50 each. And they were in good shape! (We weren't sure what to expect for that price, lol...)

We went & got 100. That should be enough framing material for a 12' x 20' greenhouse & benches!

CC - we're HOPING to start tomorrow... But it may be a couple of weeks yet. We got some sheeting that we'll be installing under some siding that we're putting on the bottom 3-4 feet. Mike broke a window on the truck camper top loading it, so tomorrow may be getting the window replaced... And with our biz being so crazy right now, well, you know how it is.

Wyldhawk9 - I know.... I know... I actually have photos, but somehow my settings on here are totally messed up & I can't post them. I keep meaning to send them to Sanderson, but just haven't TAKEN the time. :-) I'll get there. I promise!

Windmere - I don't think they were too far from you - just south of the airport. PM me if you want their info. They have lots!!

Ralitaco & Kelejan - I agree! He's an awesome guy.... Thanks.

I'll keep you all informed! :-)

Sorry I've been scarce lately. Busy, crazy....

So - update on the greenhouse:

DH came to the sad conclusion that the slope on the greenhouse area was way too great to do a straight run. So we decided on concrete. Then we realized that that was going to be a BUNCH of concrete AND we'd have to make it at least 6 or 7 inches at the bottom to keep the pad from tipping over.

Last conclusion is that we're going to have to step it down gradually using some of those 2x4's. It's not what he wanted to do, but it's the best we can come up with.

And now he has bronchitis, so we're at a standstill... yea....

BUT - we found a screened storm door on clearance at HD; we've gotten a circulation fan & thermostat to set it; he's bought a couple of lights to put inside; and we've pretty well got the floor plan laid out (mentally, at least).

Progress..... :-)

In the meantime, I've gotten some of the beds cleared of the grass & weeds from not doing my cleanup 2 falls ago. Again, progress... AND it's getting light around 6:15 now, so I can get out nice & early without disturbing the neighbors too much.

We got some bird netting for the blueberries. Looks like another NICE crop. The birds have already been investigating. Boy, are they in for a rude surprise this year. I'm expecting 3-5 gallons off of our 5 or 6 bushes.

Despite the challenges you've been facing, you and Mike have still accomplished quite a bit!  I understand how you feel though.  My myriad of tasks sometimes seems overwhelming.

Marie, do you use pine straw as a mulch?  My ornamental plants are beginning to need too much water.  Since I have a ton of pine trees on my property, it would be economical for me to use pine straw, but I am perfectly fine with investing in bark or whatever else might be good.

Please let me know when you have moment.  If all goes well, I might lay down some mulch this afternoon before it rains.

PS:  Yolos, or anyone else, feel free to chime in too!56432

Thanks!  Smile

"Mildew on the squash leaves & aphids on the beans"...sounds like a line from hillbilly jug band tune.

Last year it rained so much every cucumber plant basically rotted away from one thing or another...2016 babies sprung out of the ground yesterday.
