My 2014 Garden Plan

Please give advise on the placement, and what needs to be moved around.

Is the layout ok? Many people have viewed the post, but no one has offered an opinion.

It's a little small for older eyes! I enlarged it and then used a magnifying glass! I started off with a plot plan like yours with the little plants. Then just went to a blank plot plan and penciled in the names and varieties. I have done a lot of erasing this spring, trying to fit in everything I want.

I would spread out the tomatoes to at least 1 1/2 squares. The book states 2 squares so I'm compromising at 1 1 /2 squares. I would have put the radishes up front because they nature so fast and it's easier to reach them and replant. I don't see any glaring errors. The best thing to do is plant your garden and you will find out what works good and what works bad! Are the 2 circles tomatillos? Are they regular sized pots with one per each? Or are they oak barrel-sized with more than one? I think both will work.

I bet the ducks are going to love being near the garden! They will keep the winter squash trimmed when it crosses their fence. You can use their pond water for a nutrient boost as well.

I would put the strawberries with the herbs, they are perennials as well.
You intend to vertical grow the summer squash? It will be easier to do pots with them like you have done for the other squash and tomatillos. They are kind of pushy and would over whelm the cukes next to them. You are figuring that the radishes and carrots will be done by the time the summer squash gets big? Good idea.
In my life cabbage takes a minimum of 18"x18", the chives will be ok but the chard will suffer.
That is a patch of crowder peas in the 4x4? Tell me how they grow, I received a free seed packet and have no idea about them.

I do not know how to grow in your climate except what I have read here. So I know you need to watch out for SVB in those squash and blights in the tomatoes. You might want to spread the tomatoes a bit farther apart to help on that.

Thanks for the replies: the winter squash and tomatilloes will be planted in old tractor tires. I have 20 acres of woodland, and an old uncle use to dump tires on the property, so I figured I would try to put them to good use. The potatoes are also in tires.

I was planning to put the summer squash in the bed, but they can easily be transferred to tires. I have no shortage, have at least 200 of them things. 

The peas are what we call in Louisiana Field peas. These are the quick picks. They grow on an upright plant and don't vine. These are a hybrid, the one that vine is an heirloom.

The cabbage I planted for the fall never really did anything. They are not much bigger than when I planted them. 

The winter here in Louisiana has been unusually cold. The last average frost date in Louisiana is March 15th, and often have what we call a Easter snap right around that time. Last year we got a hard frost. I don't know about this year though. 

I will plant my pole green beans March 1st and if a frost is expected after they come up I will mulch with pine straw. That hat my dad always did.

This is the 1st time I will have planted any kind of garden, I ran across SFGing and decided to give it a try.

For the diagram I liked the program, but the pictures are very small.
