Can anyone recommend a non-HP(Hewlett Packard) home printer that for sure does NOT force you to use colored inks to make black OR have a software jinx that forces you to throw out your cartridges when there's still ink left in them?

A special man
My daughter decided to read his biography last year (fifth grade) and she wrote a paper about him. She really admires him. He was, indeed, a very special man.camprn wrote:USA Agricultural history is rich. Here is one man's story. Once upon a time you may have heard of him.

Why not go in for a mono laser printer that of course only prints in black.
The cartridges are more expensive but far cheaper per copy. I actually have an HP LaserJet 6L Printer that I bought when I had my first computer round about 1996 and it is still going strong. Now I use compatible toner cartridges at about $40 each and they last me a couple of years and I am always printing out stuff as I run a small home business but do not use colour because my printing is only utility stuff.
Hope this helps.
ETA: A simple Brother HL2140 would go for about $150 Canadian for single sided copies and an HL2240DD for double-sided copies would be only a few dollars more.
Those are the cheapest ones. there are more expensive one $300 to $400.
Possibly cheaper in the USA.

I'm in the middle of our getting our taxes ready, and my HP printer is about to drive me to drink!
Re: Senseless Banter...
Just to be fair to HP, my Samsung laser printer does the exact same thing. Our original HP laser printer still worked, but was so old it required too many software patches to install it and the resolution wasn't as good as newer models. Finally talked hubby into a new one and have had to replace the black already because of that new software thing.boffer wrote:+1Marc Iverson wrote:Can anyone recommend a non-HP(Hewlett Packard) home printer that for sure does NOT force you to use colored inks to make black OR have a software jinx that forces you to throw out your cartridges when there's still ink left in them?

IMO, it's all because of a practice called planned obsolescence, or deliberate/built-in/engineered obsolescence. We live in a disposable society of mass consumerism. Companies either have groomed us to create that mindset, or at least have learned to profit off of that mindset.

Re; senseless banter
High volume printing: laser everytime cost less and more reliable. My first was an OKI but six years in my ownership they stop making the cartridge
Because I was no longer volume printing I bought a HP ,and found out I knew curse words I never heard before.
I now own a cheapie Brother but it works a charm. if k.you only do blac
Brother does make a monochrome inkjet
Best of Luck

18:47:08We have two HP Colour Laser Jet CP217 printers which use powder toners ..
I buy a full set of top up toners on line with the correct refill kit when we buy a new printer each refilled cartridge does in excess of 2,000 sheets and you can reuse the OEM cartridges for four or five refills
It's a much cheaper option than in inkjets but not so good for high quality photo prints as you cannot use heat glaze paper ( it goes gummy and sticks in the machine )

Re: Senseless Banter...
My darling daughter and SIL gave us an HP Internet wifi printer. It is both good news and bad news. The bad news is that it goes through ink cartridges faster than I change my underwear. The good news is that we can print to if from our iPhones and iPads through either via our wifi router or via the Internet. It features a scanner, fax and printing both sides.
HP have learned that you give the printer away and make money on the ink cartridges. I DESPISE that business philosophy. If anyone ever comes out with a printer that has longer lasting and more affordable ink cartridges, I'd leave HP products like Sherman left Atlanta.
Can you share the HP printer model number, Plantoid? (Or would you have to kill us if you told us?)

HP Colour Laser Jet CP1217 printer is our printer model number ... I'll see what available here in the UK ..as USA tends to have slightly different models that run on 110 volts instead of a good reliable powerful 240 volts .
This UK one will be most likely the next colour laser jet powder printer we get when the first CP1217 one dies ( both are six years old this April ) .
Getting the refill powder is easy on line .. put, " Refill toners for HP ******** " into a search engine or look on eBay .
I got four bottles of loose powder , a pair of pliers & a hot melt cutter to make the access holes in the cartridge to do the refilling. ( As an additional kit for £ 10 .00 )
After using all the powder in the first kit , I've just purchased bigger bottles of the toner powders 500 ml instead of the initial 100 ml refill sized ones.
If you use eBay do look carefully at the scores the seller has & go back for a few pages. Some of the cheaper Chinese colour toner powders don't seem to make the grade .
Some cartridge on board counter chips can be reset to zero with the replacement of a small chip on the cartridge .. I don't need this on our current machines for I can set the cartridge low ink warnings to ignore and only refill them when I notice the colour fading on the prints .

Re: Senseless Banter...
Thanks for the recommendations. Maybe the solution is to have two printers. The one we have (it's a Canon) works great for color.
Definitely a laser, too. This one we have is a laser and used to work great. Ink jets are great for top quality photos, but their ink is even more scandalously expensive than laser toner inks.
Rabbithutch, I like that your solution saves money, but it sounds like it may be beyond my level of mechanical ability, and I don't have the tools. Or maybe it just sounds intimidating.

Re: Senseless Banter...
I followed Kelejan's suggestion, and got the Brother HL2275 laser printer, black only. $115 at WM plus $40 for an extra cartridge that's supposed to be good for 1200 pages. Wow, is it ever fast compared to an ink jet!
(I'm sure I couldn't hire a monk that cheap!)

Re: Senseless Banter...
Well, maybe try to remember to give us an update on your printer in a year? Hehe. Like I said, I got a new laser printer, and have run into the same problem with the cartridges that the others have complained about with their ink jets. The software simply shuts it down and won't let you print until you replace the cartridge. Never happened with our old HP laser printer. We would know it would need to be replaced because it would print out more and more faded, but a cartridge lasted us years. I needed to replace my first one here in less than a year. Very disappointing.
