Post  floyd1440 11/30/2013, 5:30 am

My wife got the mail yesterday and I was shocked to see a seed catalog so soon.  Had to check it out briefly and it was a 2014 Johnny's seed catalog for 2014.  Most seed companies are running sales on there last years inventories at this time of the year.

238 pages, larger than previous years, so I am going to open it up and see what happens....

Good news, maybe I'll get my Johnny's today then! I've gotten Dixondale Farms so far. As always, eagerly awaiting Baker Creek!

I have GOT to go the the post office!  No mailbox at home, so we get everything sent to our PO box.  I have to admit that I could not wait, and I have already placed my tomato seed order online from Tomato Fest.  I am drastically reducing my experimentation next spring and am sticking to the basics that I know we eat and preserve.  I ordered the varieties of sauce tomatoes that grew the best for me and then only 1 or 2 'specials'.

Got High Mowing, waiting patiently for Johnnys.

My goal for the 2013 gardening season was to grow everything from seed. I did pretty well with that.

My goal for 2014 is to save seeds from my own plants and not buy any any more. So 2015 should be a completely free gardening season...well, except for the water bill. But I'm hoping to figure out this wood chip mulch thing to help with that.

I got High Mowing but no Johnny's yet. Tho I'm cutting back drastically next spring (if my addiction can stand it Very Happy), I still love thumbing thru and making out a dream list.

I forgot to mention I got my Pinetree Garden catalog a couple weeks ago.  I like this one because the seed amts are smaller for the backyard gardener; 25 cuke seeds, 30 cauli, 300 carrot, 15-25 tomato, 10-20 pepper, 25 pansy, 50-300 herb seeds, etc and rates are reasonable.  They are superseeds.com online.

I was flipping through my new catalog and found something my wife and I like but never attempted to grow,  Bok Choy and figured I would give it a try this year, a square or two.

Went to my SFG book and cannot seem to find any info there.  Am I missing something?  Need to know how many per square at least.

Must have missed it back to the book..........

If you use the search box at the top left of this site you'll get a few hits for bok choy.

I love the stuff, but my spring planting bolts easily. I get the best results in fall. I plant 5/sq, like dice, and may eat it as cut and come again while small, or let them grow a bit and then harvest the 4 outside ones to cook up as baby bok choi, allowing the middle one grow big. If I plant more densely, when I thin them they transplant easily to other open spaces in the garden.

BUT, they are worm magnets! I suggest you cover as soon as you plant them. That's how bad it is in my area.

floyd.....I grew one Pak Choi (Bok Choy) per square but sowed lettuce seed in the outer corners to pick as baby lettuce and radishes, too.

I am hoping to save seed this coming season as well.  I am planting (the intention is there!) my tomato varieties 1 per box, then isolating a few branches just for some seed saving.  I also plan on being more diligent about my mulching efforts, so hopefully I will get some good results.  Until spring.....

I plant a super fast and small variety of bok choi called Ching Chiang (40 days from seed). I do like to start them inside and then transplant out at 4-5/square.

I haven't seen any catalogs yet. Seems like they are winging westward Laughing

I had thought about doing that too for 2014, but had a real duh moment when I remembered that I didn't save hardly any seeds this year!  dangit

I think I've reached the right garden size to provide all my veggies year 'round, so I'm done expanding for now.  My only expenses in 2014 should be miscellaneous seeds and impulse purchases of seedlings.  That might be wishful thinking, but it's my plan for now! First Seed Catalog 2014 4223211841

Oh yeah, no catalogs at this west coast garden yet.

I saved lots of pepper and tomato seeds last year and the year before so I have lots of varieties stored in my fridge crisper. They'll be good for a few more years yet.
But I still always find something new I want to try from the catalogs.

I got my first two seed catalogs over two weeks ago. One was from Pinetree and the other one had to many flowers and stuff so I threw it away. I think that I have enough left over seeds for most things for next year. I am going with one more 4x4 bed this winter as I will return to planting  squash after quitting for a season. I only saw two or three squash bugs this past season so the absence of squash was good.

Business must be bad for most UK seed merchants for this year i reckon I've had a couple of catalogues every 6 to 8 weeks all through the year.

Same with old row gardening box and such things but at about a cycle of every 8 to 10 weeks instead.

I've been looking on line and found a few smaller seed merchants who sell seed quite  different from the run of the mill stuff the big boys sell .

I hope to be getting some really old fashioned heritage climbing peas 6 to 20 feet tall climbers  instead of the short vined easy to mechanically harvest versions that have flooded the market this last 40 years or so.

Please tell us their names when you do.  The short ones seem a waste of vertical space, though they may have many other virtues.

Will see if I can find that variety of Bok Choy.  So you do 4/square and I have heard that they attract a bunch of bugs too.

One of the variety of " runner peas " on this side of the pond is called "  Telegraph " and dates back almost to Victorian times , by all accounts it's how peas used to be .

I think it is also called Alderman and Tall Telephone. I see it listed in Thompson & Morgan, and Territorial. There is also Wando, that is supposed to be heat resistant.
I have been wondering about trying these also, just not sure about shelling peas.

Just got my seedsavers.org catalog today. Their yearly new additions page looks underwhelming, but the photography throughout is gorgeous. They go light on instructions, especially compared to, say, Territorial Seeds.
