Yes, ginger and garlic are planned for the vacant plots in the 3rd box. I believe you can just plant from bulbs bought from grocer, is that that correct?

I can't wait to hear how the ginger does. I tried it but it didn't take. It is possible I just don't have enough heat here. Look forward to your results.

A nasty Mildew formed on my Zucchini leaves, i used the diluted urine spray method for removal, hopefully that will work.

Frames are up, just need to insert the trellis mesh in preparation for some vertical growing as per Mel's Book.

Great idea, the stepped beds...beautiful, too! Question: how are your industrial-strength trellises fastened to the boxes?
And, yes, you can plant ginger rhizomes purchased at a grocer's; just pick over the selection and buy ones with nodules that are beginning to sprout. Here in Western Oregon it's a bit too cool to do a good job of growing ginger, but I have three plants (all from rhizomes bought at a Japanese grocery) growing this year, and all in pots so they can be moved in to warmth for the winter. Another Nonna experiment. BTW, did you prevail against the powdery mildew? I'm about to yank six cucumber plants out that are infected. Nonna

They are just screwed to the boxes with roofing battern screws, the frames are roll formed metal left over from fence job.

After 3 applications of urine solution, the mildew disappeared. Accurately hitting the target was the most difficult task.... haha, naughty me, ... no I used a spray bottle with 4 part water.

Thanks for sharing this. I read that it works but haven't heard of anyone on the forum using it yet. How simple!

It hasn't returned, but I must mention after spaying it on, I also brushed it with a fine hair brush to physically remove the mildew. Doesn't appear to have harmed the plant.

Can anyone explain why having a few small veggie boxes attracts so many diverse insects, the area is now teeming with them? Butterflys, colourful bugs, ants, spiders, etc. Is it the Mels Mix or the plants themselves that attract them? Or maybe both.

(and beneficials) found my little SFG.

I bet so many bugs get attracted to many gardens because around them all they have in the neighborhood is lawns. Our gardens may be the only game in town!

Yep, I've been nibbling on those baby salad greens every few days and they just keep on coming, harvest is still 10weeks away according to the seed info. Tomatoes, parsnips and broccoli are a bit slow to kick, first flowers appearing now on toms, Zucchini is going off as are the squashes, beans, cucumbers, carrots, beats and peppers.

Seems like there is a settling period, then they just go bang. Hope it keeps up.

You can harvest, or you can collect a few outer leaves every day and it will just keep producing.

Lettuce and spinach I planted last September lasted until February. I cut leaves about once a week or week and a half on each plant. I had about ten or twelve spinach plants so I had fresh greens almost every other day.
