Bird Netting is nasty stuff!
Bird netting material is awful to work with. I began feeling pretty smart today with a bright idea to make a sling out of it to serve two functions as bird deterrent and watermelon support. Quickly noticed it is llama momma deterrent. Crazy stuff is hard to work with, hard to see the very fine netting, it came off the roll in a double sheet and cut edges instantly tangled into itself, then wrapped itself around my wedding rings. Sure glad I wasn't making a how-to-use-bird netting video. But in the end my little hanging watermelon is supported and protected. Two other melons that went over the bottom of the bed are sitting on clear plastic with a cage of hardware cloth plus the bleeping bird netting around it. It frustrated me so here's hoping any ground critters will annoy as easily and move on...

omg. I'm totally LOL! Just went through the same thing this am!! I was trying to get a little straight metal rod NEXT to the bird netting, it quickly became entangled IN the netting, I went to undo the netting, and caught my necklace in it, then it caught onto my charms on my necklace, now, I have 20' of bird netting hanging on my neck !! I just "ripped" the whole thing apart and tore out the metal rod!!

That stuff can make a preacher cuss! Just the other day I had to get some out to cover the blueberry bushes and by the time I was finished, I wasn't fit to be around.

That's pretty funny SG. Don't take this the wrong way SG and BN but I am glad there are others who aren't fond of bird netting. I kept thinking it must be me doing something wrong. But here we are one from CA, one from GA and me from OH and none of us thinks very much of this crummy stuff.
The packaging material practically swoons with descriptions of protecting fruit trees etc. Can you imagine trying to wrap this garbage around a tree?? No way!! I'd end up wrapped tightly to the ladder.
This is my call to officially pronounce the boycotting of bird netting.

I can't stop laughing because your stories are great and I can identify with them! Especially as two of you had the same thing happen in the same morning! I thought it was just something I was doing wrong that got it all tangled up with things and had to cut it up to get it untangled!!! It grabs hold of plants and things and won't let go!

Trouble for Tricia too?? welcome to the bird netting haters club!
Perhaps the gov't should be notified, we don't need those ugly tall walls to protect our borders, just use bird netting.

Re: Bird Netting is nasty stuff!
Totally relate!!
This spring I bought bird netting as one of the many items that a new gardener thinks they will need. I planted hanging towers with strawberries and herb seedlings and thought I would protect them from the birds and crafty squirrels and roof rats. I went blind working with the stuff. It's worse that Saran wrap and reflective metal tape combined. All snarled up, grabbing hold of the little plants. Just dreaded finding an angry rat tangled up it one morning.

Re: Bird Netting is nasty stuff!
I can identify with your pain. I will never buy the stuff again. Tried to cover a dwarf cherry tree. Well, the birds got thru just the same and then trying to untangle the mess getting it off the tree was a horror movie.
Also tried it over my blueberry bushes, again to save them from the birds. Another big mess. Now I put light-weight insect barrier over the blueberries. Its solid but lets 90% sunshine thru and all the rain and when I want to take it off, easy peazy! The blueberries ripened and I harvested them instead of the birds.
I'll never get bird netting again.

This is the result of the watermelon support and bird netting effort from the other day. Hope the birds truly stay away. It's a Japanese mini taki gem variety, same as my avatar. The rind turns yellow when it ripens
