hanging baskets with Mel's Mix
Tried Mel's Mix in some hanging baskets this year.Nasturtiums, marigolds, and a few cayanetta plants.
Started a little late in the season, however I am pleased with the results

I did the same with all of my hanging baskets with petunias this year. They are doing much better than last year when I used regular potting soil.

Jimmy, are your nasturtiums flowering? My impression has always been that, in order to flower, they prefer poorer dirt over wonderful dirt.

Re: hanging baskets with Mel's Mix
NO DIRT....all Mel's Mix
I have never planted flowers before this year.
While looking through a seed catalog in early winter I saw "whirlybird mix " nasturtiums, planted them in the basement hot box, then set them up in my test hanging baskets...
In 1 basket I added a marigold plant, the other a cayanetta pepper plant, as you can see their doing great and this was only 1 plant. Next year I'll have 4 around the basket.
Funny thing is, my wife spent a small fortune on 2 sets of hanging baskets for our porch, both sets bit the dust, while my little penny a piece nasturtiums saved the day.....
By the way..I watered these baskets about 4 times a day, maybe 1/3rd cup at a time. Kept the water from draing out the bottom... Basket below had many more flowers, I just kept the older ones cut back.
I had a nasturtium in my raised bed that just about took over 1/4 of the area, it grew so large I needed to remove it so the cucumbers would grow. A few flowers developed, however the plant grew huge..

Re: hanging baskets with Mel's Mix
I'm sorry - when I wrote good dirt, I was taking poetic license. I knew you used MM, which is of course, not at all dirty!
The nasturtium in your SFG box is what I would expect from growing them in luxurious conditions - very happy and healthy, but not a lot of flowers. The one in your hanging basket is awesome!

Martha, thats what wifey said after I hung them on the porch.
Next year I am going to have about 20 baskets all over, their so easy to start and take care of.
Maybe I have a green thumb....LOL

Re: hanging baskets with Mel's Mix
That looks good Jimmy.
Most of our six hanging baskets have some nasturtiums in them in my home made MM they seem happy enough and are in flower.
The MM is now 2 yrs. old and has been enriched with home made liquid comfrey feed and run off out a trailer of mixed animal manures and associated beddings.
Last year the baskets were phenomenal in flower ..no special colour scheme nor a regimented boring planting parade .
Earlier this year I sprinkled a few hands full of composted coir fibre mixed with neat home compost at 5 to one of compost into each basket to make up the volume growth medium that has been lost to natural decay
All the baskets are on a time switched sprinkler system that comes on at 04.00 hrs. each day , which is very handy for bad days when I struggled to even stand up. Though only being able to use a 5 min wetting period ( the shortest on the timer settings does tend to wash out the nutirents hence my feeding them
My nasturtiums are a standard garden variety , they don't like being too damp nor too dry and they do need feeding & dead heading as the flowers decline to give outstanding colour for many months. I saved seed from last year on two baskets from flowers I let run to seed so that I could add them into this years baskets and stick some more in the flower beds.
The perennial hardy pansies in the baskets are two yrs. old and really look good even in frosts . I was surprised to discover that several of the dwarf trailing Fuchsia had overwintered and came back to life despite several weeks of minus 10 C or so .
To stop my baskets drying out I've lined them with some thin pond liner cut into 20 inch dia daisies so that there are six large petals that over lap each other when inserted between the rubberized coir nest and the actual basket steel frame

That's amazing. As I mentioned about 1/3rd cup 3-4 times a day, kept mine from draining out.
I fed them twice weekly, fish emulsion on Sat, and Miracle Gro on wed.
Next year I'll be able to experiment more with other methods of feeding.

Re: hanging baskets with Mel's Mix
Here's me bumping my gums saying I've got nasturtiums in my hanging baskets.
I finally got round to tidying them up this afternoon and dead heading that should have been done weeks ago only to find no nasturtiums of worth .
See if you can find the culprits in the picture ?

How I just love my neighbour for planting all those darn buddleias they have planted at the bottom of their garden

I see them, I see them! Did I win a prize? Seriously, I loved the tour of your flowers. Thank you for sharing.
Re: hanging baskets with Mel's Mix
All my hanging baskets are in MM although I did add some soil moist to help with the drying out. Still had to water twice a day.

Thank you
One thought, I water 3-4 times a day, with a small watering can, I water just enough to keep from dripping onto the railing
