Swallowtail caterpillars on carrots?
Is this a swallowtail caterpillar? If so, are they very harmful? If they are, I'll pick them them off. We don't have a lot of them up here, so if they aren't, I'll let them be!

Lucky you! Yes it is and yes it will appear to eat quite a bit of foliage, but the plant will make more.

Thanks Camprn! Since there's only two, I'll let 'em be, and hopefully be able to catch a glimpse of that beauty before it flies away.

I saw a black butterfly on my parsley yesterday. Since I had just read this thread, I'm expecting caterpillars after a bit. It was on the parsley bloom.
Can I capture them so the don't decimate my dill and parsley? And will they eat anything else if I do?

Now you know LM. I believe it's always worth looking up a species before it's destroyed.

They won't really decimate your plants. They will defoliate them a bit, but then the plant will put out more foliage, making it stronger.walshevak wrote:I saw a black butterfly on my parsley yesterday. I always plant or allow to grow renegade dill, just for these lovely creatures. I love them.

I just found one in my garden too! If you gently poke at the hind end it will put up it's little horns.
