Hi all. I know that rabbit droppings are great to add to compost composition. But... I found a big pile of deer droppings in the forest behind our house. Are these ok to use?

What I'm getting at is: Do deer droppings attract other deer? I don't want my raised beds to be a beacon to attract deer to my vegetable buffet. I'm very unfamiliar with rural living, so I need some advice.

Thanks so much all.

Hmmm, I'm not sure. I wonder if they have to me composted or not?

Most of the concern with deer droppings, as with any manure, is the possible transmission of E. coli bacteria. It is recommended that you hot compost the material to at least 130 degrees to kill all pathogens. If not hot composting, then it is recommended it be cold composted for at least 1 year.

Hi there
We have deer in our back back yard all the time and RARELY do they come into our garden. I gather deer poop AND moose poop in the forest behind our place and it does not seem to have changed the situation.

HOWEVER I encourage the boys in our family to pee out the back yard at night,,,,, it is said that human URINE will keep them away.
Oddly enough though we encounter deer here almost every day, they rarely get into my garden except for late in the fall. OR early in the year they eat my tulips.
