Late Sprouting or Lost Seed? Empty Late Sprouting or Lost Seed?

Post  WriterCPA Wed May 29, 2013 4:02 pm

I am in zone 7 in Maryland an hour south of the PA line, so sometimes things can be a bit like zone 6. I have been planting in succession since the end of April. (I have 6 4x4 gardens).

Fungus is always an issue for me, so I applied copper fungicide to kill of any spores before planting. (My indoor sprouts were wiped out in a day by damping off -- (never had this happen before) and other house plants have shown signs of problems -- more copper.)

Things seem normal for my successive plantings of lettuce, beets, turnips, radishes, marigolds, pole beans, and spinach. But where are my carrots, swiss chard and basil?

I have only seen one or two carrots in each square appear FINALLY this week. The basil and swiss chard are still AWOL. I had bird netting over the plots to keep my feathered friends at bay and sprinkled Sluggo on the perimeter when the slugs went after my bush beans and turnips.

Did a fungus get my carrots, etc? Should I replant the carrots and basil and swiss chard? Wait a few more days now that temps are in the 90's (we've had a cool spring?) Leave the spots empty and just plan to use them for fall plantings in August? Shocked

I'm having the same issue. First they grew and something ate them down to nubbins. So I replanted and covered with chicken wire thinking it was a rabbit. Now there's only one or 2 sprouts in each square and it's been over a month. I'm giving up and planting lettuce.

Late Sprouting or Lost Seed? Empty Warm Weather Doing the Trick

Post  WriterCPA Thu May 30, 2013 8:11 pm

We're in our second day of 90 degree heat and my carrots are popping up. Looks like the Swiss chard and basil are sending up some shoots, but I don't know their seedlings as well. Based on the pattern, those should be veggies and not weeds. I guess I'll know in a few days.

Late Sprouting or Lost Seed? Empty Re: Late Sprouting or Lost Seed?

I think that the seed hadn't sprouted yet due to the weather they tend to like the soil to be really warm to sprout. Just a thought. My carrots have yet to sprout as well, I have replanted them twice now but I think that they will sprout once the sun decided to show its face again. Its been rainy and icky out for about 2 weeks now.
