So I got this bright idea that I would like to grow some birdhouse gourds BEFORE finding out how big they get. affraid Right now the plant is small enough to transplant and I do have a spot with enough space above ground... but how much space do I need for its root system?

Anyone have a clue?

I've never seen birdhouse gourds discussed on the forum, you may have to search elsewhere for answers. Good Luck!

I think Josh grew them a while back. Drix, what did the seed package recommend?

I grew them once years ago and I don't remember if they needed any more root space than any other squash or gourd. But, NEVER AGAIN. They climbed up and in and all over a very mature (now gone) arbor vitae and were ready to climb all over some utility wires before I started hacking and pulling and chopping them down as best as I could.

I'll second that. The roots aren't all that space-demanding, but the vines are like kudzu. Be sure you have PLENTY of trellis space.

Well I have this old claw foot bath tub in the corner and there is about 20 feet of fence in one direction and 5 in another with plenty of room on the other side of the short fence.

Oh what the heck.... I'm going for it. If I have, to I can put on a fedora and grab a machete!
