Hi Everyone, I have seen a lot of SFG Plans that have the same crop growing in adjacent squares... I thought Mel's book advised against doing this. For those that do plant the same plant in adjacent squares are there any tips to doing this without inviting bugs or do you only do this with certain plants?

I have an 8x4 that I am planning and am having trouble deciding where to put things because I'm trying to avoid planting same plants by each other... any tips or advise would be helpful!

I plant adjacent when I need to. Some who followed Mel's advice and spread around I've heard felt it was additional work to provide for the needs of separate(d) squares that would be easier done if they'd been adjacent.

I haven't seen any negative to planting adjacents. I also may've misunderstood the sentiment of those that did it differently though.

I am grouping more plants this year compared to last year to assist with a few things 1) it's easier to set up critter protection when adjacent plants are similar, 2) makes harvest easier, 3) it helps with companion planting - one parsley in the middle of adjacent carrot squares, 4) it is easier to plan the garden for three seasons - spring, summer, and fall.

I tend to plant some things adjacent also. I have read that if you get a disease in say tomatoes, if you have a lot of tomato plants in that bed, the disease can spread easier. I plant 24 broccoli plants in one 4' x 6' bed.

A few years ago I gave up doing the checkerboard style of planting different plants together, mostly for managament reasons, as previously stated by the other gardeners here.
