Getting your scraps to the compost bin

This is my first year trying to do a compost. I have the structure built using a wire fence and two fence posts. Right now it just has grass clippings. I'm curious to know how you are transporting your compost materials (fruit and veggie peels) from the kitchen to the bin? I thought about using a bucket or container of some type and just fill it up during the week and dump it on the weekend but afraid it would stink up the kitchen area. I'll have some fruit and veggie scraps because I have a juicer and use it 2 times a week. Do you have any tips for me on the easiest way to do this?

My own is stainless steel and has two filters. Thus, no odor.

I have a small scale worm bin and a couple large ice cream pails and empty coffee cans that I keep under the kitchen sink for this purpose. I try to fit what I can in worm bin and fill up the others as needed. I have an agreement with my hubs that I empty the compost pales every 2-3 days...which is easy since my tumbler is right next to our drive way and take it out when I head out the door for work. We don't have a problem with odor when it's take out this often...also because I drink an insane amount of coffee and the grounds seem to help with odor. But if you can't hide your scrap holder, there are many fancy ones on the market.

I keep a bucket w/lid on our deck.

I'm pretty good about packing my lunch to work, and pretty good about bringing back the used coffee grounds from work in my empty lunch container. We will often put scraps in that lunch container before dumping the container in our bucket each evening.

We take out kitchen waste tub out after any meal that generates it & then put the tub through the dishwasher if it is going to be used or give it a hot wash by hand if not.

I put my kitchen scraps in large rectangular Ziploc containers. I store the containers in the fridge and dump the contents on the weekend or during the week if necessary.

I have a few different things I do. I have a coffee ground container that I keep filling with coffee grounds and filters, fruits and vegies until it is full. I also used an ice cream bucket until it broke. I also freeze some of the cut up fruits and vegies in zip lock bags. I write on them "compost". I read it helps them break down in the compost pile faster. Sometimes I have a lot of spoiled stuff from the fridge, my freezer stuff, old cereal, old cornmeal, etc. and the coffee container and take them all out on a cookie sheet. I will be starting a new compost pile soon so the stuff in the freezer will come in handy.

This is a little off topic, but if there is a way you can find some leaves, tp tubes, shredded newspaper, etc. that will help you get your pile size a little quicker. Also do a search on this forum on compost. You will learn more than you ever thought there was to learn and become an expert in a short amount of time, lol.

My DDIL got me a stainless steel kitchen compost pail with filters as a gift a few years ago. Its ideal under the sink. No odor. I toss kitchen scraps in as they accumulate and take them out every 3 days to a week.

I've since run out of filters so I use a piece of waxed paper under the lid and it keeps odors from escaping.

We just use a 2 qt Ziploc tub for collection, and a five year old boy for transport to the composter.

He's been doing a great job dumping. I've even got him trained to stop by the rain barrel and put a little water in the tub to rinse out the coffee grounds.
