Hi!

I'm going to try this again. Thought I posted this and it's not showing up.

I am new to SFG and just went out today to a nursery close by to see what composts they had. They had cow, chicken, bat guano and one called Cotton Burr. I've never seen that last one on anyone's list of compost at this site and am wondering if it's good. Any opinions? I still have some time before I can set up anything with this wonderful spring weather.

I use cotton burr, but you MAY have to deal with pulling up an endless supply of cotton seedlings on at least the brand I have.

I don't mind, because I clean the beds of various types of pine litter anyway. Smile

The bagged cotton burr compost I purchased my first year was not actually compost at all...just sticks, stems, and various pieces that hadn't even started breaking down...so make sure what you are looking at is good stuff before adding to the SFG.

More on cotton burr compost:
http://www.organic-gardening-for-life.com/cotton-burr-compost.html
http://www.organic-gardening-for-life.com/Americas_best_compost.html

Cotton burrs are a waste product of the cotton ginning process. Cotton burr compost is sold in different grades (coarse, medium, and fine) and is usually available as regular or acidified. Acidified cotton burr compost contains sulfur, a naturally occurring element that is used to acidify soil. If you have a soil pH higher than seven, sulfur can improve plant growth in many species.

Thanks so much for your replies. Sounds like the cotton burr will be one of my composts. Now I just need to wait for our flood waters to go down. I guess I will have more time before to wait before I can set up anything. Thanks again.

I suppose that cotton burr compost is made from cotton plants west of the Mississippi?
I only read the first of roosters links, and I did not see where these folks are from.
Our cotton in SC does not contain anything but cotton and seeds that are in the cotton when it leaves the field.
