How Often to Water
I finished all necessary preps on my box yesterday and planted lettuce and carrots by seed. How often should I water at this point? The box is covered with a plastic greenhouse that mounts onto it so I am hoping this will warm up the soil a bit for faster germination. How do I determine at what point to take off the greenhouse?

jjc, it would be a good move to use the search link on the left of the page to get the basic information you are asking. There is more than one variable to all the questions you are asking. Do some research and then come back for unanswered questions. You will get a lot more cooperation if you will do a little homework for yourself first. Just trying to be helpful. This is a great site to learn and share.

Yup, do a little reading about cold frames and hot beds. once you have germination you will want to vent your little hoop house. The sun is starting to get powerful now.

I learned the hard way with my lettuce
Jjc, I am on my third attempt with planting lettuce. First attempt with inside planting, my window box did not provide enough light and my seedlings became so "leggy" that the poor things could not support their own weight; the stems snapped (you should not have that problem because you will have outside sun nurturing your seedlings).
Next attempt I put my seedlings in the sun during the day and brought them in on chilly nights. I had the brilliant idea to put a plastic hood over them one sunny day that I put them out. I completely fried the little guys.
Moral of this story: Be sure to remove your plastic green house on sunny days.
