composted cow manure?

I'm still looking for 2 more compost varieties. Is composted cow manure a true compost that can be used in the mix? Might be a silly question but I'm not sure. Aubuchon Hardware carries it and it's very inexpensive. I picked up some garden vegetable compost today, does that count as only 1 variety if a mix of veg. were used in the process? Finely found some course vermiculite today, it is probably the hardest ingredient to find. I'm getting the fever and we just had 18 or 20 inches of snow yesterday in southern central N.E. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum and the New England area of gardening. There are several of us around here.
Compost cow manure is considered one of the composts and as its labeled, 'composted' its ready for the graden.
The veggie mix is ONE compost.

I picked up 2 bags of cow manure today.
I plan on screening this as I did a few years ago.
After screening cow manure I found about 1/4 of the contents were small pebbles.
My wife swears by the stuff, however I'll use it as one type.

jjc....I'm not sure how you mean 'questionable.' Nonetheless you have to be sure cow manure is aged first, then composted. You can't use fresh cow manure. They have medicants, antibiotics to fight disease, etc and the manure has to age or just sit around for 9-12 months for those things to dissipate. If you can find manure that is that old, then add it to your compost pile and compost it like anything else.
If the bag says 'composted' then its already been aged and gone thru the heat process of composting so its ready to use in the garden.

quliltbea, the questionable manure I was talking about was some info from the Colorado University State Extension in an article about composting. I posted it yesterday if you want to take a look. It was titled "manure compost not so good???" Thank you for the answer you gave. jjc

jjc.....I guess on that I'll have to differ. Our comm garden runs beside an organic farmer who tills into his soil and the adjoining comm garden, lots of aged cow manure each spring. The crops are terrific so I don't see a problem here. He's been an organic farmer for years and has great production which he sells at his farm market. I guess I'd have to read a lot more than just one article stating it wasn't a good thing. For now, to each his own.

so can i throw dried out cow pies in to my compost pile and be good?

What about goat "pies"? My neighbor, who runs a legal pot farm, also has about three goats and previously offered me some manure. Based upon the weediness of the intervening meadow, I'm pretty certain that no herbicides have been used.

Goat manure makes great compost.

Goats don't really produce "pies" like cows do. Collection might be a tad difficult if they are not kept in a pen of some sort.

Agreed. I was usually only able to collect the pellets that were in their pens. If out to pasture... forget it.

Yes, they're pretty much out to pasture.... Although they do keep to a defined area.
