Am brand new to SFG. Ordered three frames from Amazon and got them yesterday.

Am in process of compiling all the Mel Mix components. Yesterday went to Lowes in my Neighborhood. Man in gardening department looked at me like I was off my rocker when I told him about Mel's Mix. Also, he couldn't tell me for sure if the chicken and cow manure were fully composted (that scares me). However, Lowes had best price for peat moss.

Thanks to the "U.S. Vermiculite Sources" spreadsheet from this forum, I found out that Pike's Nursery near my house has the 4 cu ft coarse vermiculite (29.99). But best of all, they have 1 cu ft of worm castings for 14.99!!! From all the searching I've done, that is hands down the best price I've been able to find. I'm SO excited! cheers

Congratulations on your finds! The hardest part is the scavenger hunt!

Remember: Worm Castings are very moisture retentive. It is easy to overdo it, so make sure that is at least part of a 4 or 5 part mixture. Anything less might give you too much water retention in the soil mix!

Pikes Nursery is where I got all of my compost and vermiculite my first year (2011) of doing SFG. It was nice to get almost everything in one place. It made it easy. BUT, I have found a place to get vermiculite for 19.99 (4 cu ft). Don't know where in Atlanta you are, but I found it at Swints Feed & Seed in Jonesboro. If you ever need more vermiculite, call around to the local feed and seed store and you may find it cheaper. Of course the cost of gas to drive down to Jonesboro is not worth it for 1 bag. Last time I went down there I bought 4 bags. So I won't need any again any time soon I hope.

Yolos: When I read your post today, I was thrilled. I immediately called Swint's Feed and Seed in Jonesboro. They actually had the 4 cu. ft. bags for 18.99. Wow! I called Pikes Nursery, and they said they would take the higher priced vermiculite with no problem. I immediately went to Swint's and bought the lower priced vermiculite. THANK YOU SO MUCH! thanks

By the way, I live in Fayetteville, GA. I just wrote Atlanta because it it's the closest major city. I'm going to change that.

Have you read the labelled contents of your bagged stuff ? If not check to see if you have duplicate materials and things like wood pulp/sawdust in them ..

The use of the word organic in the product name usually implies it is for organic growing , it could actually be only three different basic ingredients

The top three could virtually be indentical products just named differently .

I'm really glad I read your post. All of my composted materials are pure.... except the mushroom compost. It has grass clippings and wood pulp in it. I got it from Lowes and I simply assumed it would be pure (I should have been wary about the cheap price).

I found that a nearby nursery has 100% pure mushroom compost at 5.99 a square foot. I think I will get that and take back the other to Lowes.

Thanks for bringing all this to my attention. I would have thrown off my whole formula. thanks

You can find all sorts of things at hydroponic stores.

There's one in College Park, GA called Atlantis Hydroponics. I bet they have all sorts of compost, castings, vermiculite, perlite, coir, kelp, humus, planting mix, guano, etc.

If you have a Worm's Way, they have a special on worm castings this week. I think it is $11.50 for a bag (cannot remember the size, but it is normally $16.50).

It isn't hard to start your own worm bin. It can be done inside. One day, I am going to start one.

Windmere - I lived in Fayetteville for 32 years. About 5 years ago I moved a few miles further south to Brooks. Glad to see another SFG on the southside of Atlanta. Other active SFGers around here is Pepper in Columbus and Bnoles northwest of Atlanta.

Yolos, it's nice to have some folks from south of Atlanta for me too. What a coincidence that you lived in Fayetteville for so long. We moved here from Los Angeles about seven years ago. It was quite a culture shock. Also, going from pretty decent soil in S. Cal. to red clay in GA, was not too hot either.

We've adjusted though, and we like it here.
