I live in zone 7b/8a in Upstate SC. What plants would you recommend I start from seed indoors? I'm planning on lettuce/greens, peppers, eggplant, and tomatoes. Is there any benefit to peas, beans, melons, squash ...or anything else indoors?

I live just south of Atlanta. I am also in zone 7b/8a. If you want to grow brassicas (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower) in the spring, they have to be started early indoors. Our sping (cool weather) is so short that there is not enough time between sowing the seeds outdoors and maturity before the weather gets too hot. They will bolt if the weather gets hot.

Most gardeners around here also start their tomatoes and peppers indoors. Although our growing season is long, if you start early tomatoes indoors, then they will produce before the onset of extreme heat, disease and pests.

Check out the All New SFG book. It has a handy dandy guide in the back of the book with planting times and re-planting times according to indoor and outdoor scheduled.

I took all this information and plugged it into an Excel Calendar based on first and last frost estimates.

It was very helpful and worked great in indoor planting certain types of plants and when to transfer them outside.

You can also checkout http://www.growveg.com and that can assist u as well!

thinking of your region, get a head start with tomatoes, aubergine, peppers (chilis), okra. Melons, squashes, could be started indoors, but I am not sure there will be a big benifit from doing so. Beans, peas, other leafy veggies can be direct sow.

About when do you start brassicas indoors?

I've heard its possible to get a squash harvest in before SVB or SB decimate the plants. I might give it a try.

As jamesindetroit already pointed out, the ANSFG book has handy guides and charts in the back that you can reference again and again. See the "Spring Indoor Seed-Starting Schedule" on page 253. Broccoli= 12 weeks before last frost, cauliflower=10.
