We tried a new grow system for Habanero Pepper plants...
Then we canned some of the excellent harvest...

You and my son did the same with buckets. And he has some of the buckets in a plastic greenhouse with a small heater trying to overwinter them. One hab plant was overwintered last year and he hopes it will survive again this year.
He gave out jars of pepper jelly for gifts and now his coworkers are asking to buy jars. He also made up jars of a pepper sauce.

Since I had one of these for dinner last night, out with the old eating habits of the past few weeks:
...and in with the new! Just made a big pot of Dr. Oz's Anytime Soup. Fortunately I had most of these veggies in the freezer just waiting to be used:
Of course the carrots were freshly pulled from the SFG this morning. Still lots more in there. I'm lovin' it!
HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE! To your health!

Well, I couldn't think of anything for the topic so I decided to make our pup our avatar. We didn't have any snow last year but it has made up for it this winter so far. She loved rubbing her face in the snow and you can see the evidence on her face.
Happy New Year!

I've been enjoying my new rain/garden boots. They make me happy every time I slip them on.
I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

We're hoping to overwinter some plants, too! I hadn't canned anything before. We also gave out gift jars, and have been urged to sell some. Surprise!
I call the buckets "self-watering containers". Each 5gal. bucket holds one plant. The top c. 7-8 inches contain Mel's Mix sitting atop a perforated "soil screen" and 4"diam., soil filled, PVC "wicking chamber". The bottom 7-8inches hold water/(if needed)nutrient solutionLindacol wrote:

Amaryllis
Out with the old: blight, bugs, etc.
In with the new: Concentrating on house plants, at least the last couple months. Planting will start on the 11th of Jan.!
Finally got another white amaryllis, folks took the ones I had out in the yard.
Here are the seed pods. I hand pollinated with a paint brush.
Here are some babies I grew from seed last spring, red and salmon.
MM works great for house plants too!

I finally made it into 2013 having first constructed my brand new seed germinator /UV grow bed out in the office to keep things a bit warmer during our annual cold spell in the first three weeks of February
So , out with the old avatar and in with this new one .

Re: Monthly Avatar: January 2014~Out With The Old
Here is our new addition for 2013. Pebbles is our new kitty that we get to pick up at the end of the month, when she is old enough to leave momma.
Hopefully she will prove to be a Seed Helper as well. Jewels (dearest girl, no longer with us) was great at thinning my seedlings - usually down to zero! Panther pulls out seed packets from my boxes and fetches them when they are thrown like frisbees. Time will tell how Pebbles will fit into the gardening scene!

These are my Alpine strawberries I started from seed this fall. They are showing a little bit of new growth. I am dreaming of tiny bursting with flavor strawberries some summer to come.

What a great idea to do over the winter. I wish I had some seed to start some.

The seed was on a sale rack this fall. It followed me home, honest I do not know how it did that.

Re: Monthly Avatar: January 2014~Out With The Old
There was a big celebration of the opening of City Creek Mall in Salt Lake City, Utah. It got its name because a creek runs underground and through the middle. You can see part of the creek bed in the lower right. It is an outdoor mall that has moving plexiglass panels that can be closed up when it starts to rain or snow. Bet you never saw a tree flower lady before!

For sure! I am thinking my avatar is too big. Is there a way to shrink it a little? I feel like I am hogging all the space when I post something.
