Help all! SOS
I had a large dish of hot peppers, last of them from garden. I decided last pm to dehydrate them. I started washing and cutting tops off. Since they didn't seem to be burning my hands, I did not stop and go get the rubber gloves. affraid Wrong! I cut them all up, blanched them, and placed in the dehydrater. About 2 hrs later, I noticed my hands sort of tingling. I washed them again, and then washed with vinegar. I thought this had helped!
I got up this AM, and my hands are tingling again and my lip was burning, evidently I put my finger in mouth during sleep.
Is there anything to nutralize/remove the hot pepper from my hands?
Jo thanks

Put a teaspoon of vegetable oil in the palm of your hand, pour in 1/4 tsp salt and rub your hands vigorously for several minutes. Scrub everything. Wash with dish detergent as you normally would wash your hands. This should take care of it.

Good to know Camp, I did this a few years ago when I was in a rush to make salsa one morning, I couldn't touch my mouth or eyes for days without them burning!

Milk. I always have a glass of milk handy when I'm eating anything hot, like peppers or chili. Calms down the heat immediately.
Never try water. It won't help.

Sorry I didn't get back sooner. Thanks Camprn for the info. I tried the oil and salt, and it seemed to help, but a couple hrs later the burn would return. I ended up with a small blister on the ball of my thumb, so I called the Drs. office.
He said next time wear gloves, and use the soap/wash for poison ivy, it will remove the oils from the peppers on your hands. Meantime, put burn cream on blister. Put tomato sauce in bowl, dip hands, clean under nails in tomato sauce, scrub with tomato sauce, etc. Don't rinse or wash off, just pat dry with paper towels. Do this every hr. I did this til supper time and just had to wash up and cook. It seems it worked to draw out the heat.
What had happened was my hands were very dry and it soaked into my skin and wouldn't just wash off. Then I went to bed and it just got worse.
I'm to use a hand cream to try to relieve the dry skin from overwashing. I think I've learned my lesson.
Heaven's, I don't even know what kinds they were. I planted a hot pepper mix, and they all came up! Those plants were the only ones that were not bothered by bugs.
Thanks, Jo
