This is my first desert veggie & herb garden. I had a very successful square foot garden in the Bronx, New York. I made huge modifications to the design here to counter extreme conditions: sun, heat & water use.

I square foot in-ground, if you will, because the dry hot air makes keeping elevated beds moist enough too 'selfish', if you will. I use SqFt soil and planting guides. I'll post early pictures in the gallery so you can see what i mean, eh?

The biggest surprise is the insects! I really didn't think I'd have to work so hard to control 'em when my biggest concern was water!

The Valley is lucky to have a long 'winter' growing season and spring/early summer season.

After four years, it feels great to have a Victory Garden again.

You certainly have a challenge with the desert air and heat.

It seems like a good idea to have an in-ground SFG.
Where I live, above-ground is great, as I cannot dig very deep in my rock-strewn surface. Ay time I dig a fork or spade into the ground, it 'clangs" on a buried rock, laid down thousands of years ago by the glaciers that passed our way. It is fuunny to think that where I am standing in my garden, the ice was about 600 feet above my head.

It is wonderful how SFG can accomodate many different situations.

Look forward to your pictures when you have figured out how to do it. It is supposed to be easy, I will get around to it myself, one day.
