I'm struggling to figure out if something is wrong with my watermelon plant. There are small yellow spots on the leaves to my stars and moons watermelon, and the spots show on the underside of the leaves. **if** it's something, I think it might be downy mildew, but I can't wipe/scrape it off of the leaf, which I know you can do with powdery mildew. Other than some leaf miners, the plant seems to be healthy, it might be getting a little too much sun, but I'll be working on fixing that in the next day or two.

As the leaves open, there are a couple of faint spots, and it seems to take about a week for all the spots to come in, and then they stay as is. The seeds went into the ground just over a month ago (1 July), and the other watermelon and two pumpkins I have near them are not showing the same spots. I treated all my plants twice (once each of the last two weeks) with a general purpose fungicide (I can't remember which one right now) after I had some blight show up on my tomatoes. (Even thought I don't believe squash get blight, I figured it wouldn't hurt anything with all the heat and humidity I've had lately.)

I'm starting to wonder if the spots aren't supposed to be there. This is my first time growing watermelons, and the melons will have spots on them, so it's making me think the leaves might also have spots...

Here are some pics...

The little YELLOW spots are the stars. You will have them on the melon too. If they are white or grey spots, most likely the beginning of mildew.

::sigh::

After posting I did some more googling, and the spots are supposed to be there. Embarassed I had tried looking it up about a week ago, and for some reason I didn't get anywhere. I'll leave this up instead of pulling it down in case any other new gardeners can learn from it.

Oh, I just read about that last night! Very cool to see it in person. Don't be embarrassed about not knowing it should be that way! I probably would had thought something was wrong with my plants, too.

It's still the hot and rainy season in FL, so I'm paranoid about disease. I took a risk the put the seeds out since the growing season is so long. I don't think it helped that I mixed up my labels when I planted them...

I have the vines grown up a piece of twine I have tied off between the top of a fence post and the lip of the pot I have them in. Everything I've read says the vines are most prone to disease/pests when they are in contact with the ground, so I'm avoiding that for as long as possible. Once the fruit grows I'll cut the twine down and let them sprawl in the yard. Hopefully it works...

I'm just happy to hear I'm not killing my plants yet. Very Happy
