Does anybody have a source, or a name, for the little tri-color mini-sweet peppers you buy by the bag in the grocery store.

They're not quite Baby Belles, the Yum-Yum Golden look fairly close.

Anybody ever successfully grow them from the few seeds that are present?

Since they're mini, I'm hoping they're actually a shorter season plant.

I grew a red mini called Candice, from Renee's. Nice thick walls, small pepper with a bell look. It had to be a shorter season than full size because I got peppers in the PNW.....in the mountains!

I saw the little Baby Belles by Renee's. they look interesting but I really like the little horn shaped ones. They seem to work better in a chile holder on the grill.

You could alway try contacting the company directly. Worth a shot anyway.

Here's a brand that's sold in stores. If you watch the pictures rotate, you can see they are baby bells that are elongated, and some grow in the cute little horn shape.

I know you already said you don't think they are the baby bells, but here's a link anyway to a tri-color seed mix of those elongated baby bells. People that have grown them say they grow in all different shapes:

As far as maturation times... Just looking quickly at a random selection of peppers, mini doesn't always equal faster maturity. Good luck in your hunt! Let us know if you find something.

This is probably a stupid question...but could you save seed from the store bought peppers?

Chilliard, not a stupid question at all. When I quickly searched out an answer to the OP's question on Google, I found someone who said they did exactly that. (Liked the peppers in the store, so saved the seed from them and grew their own.) And it worked for them. So here's the quick rundown:

  • Peppers are self-fertile, and yet they can still cross pollinate freely. There's no way to know if the pepper you're saving seed from had cross pollinated - it's the next generation that shows the genetic differences.
  • The peppers could be a hybrid, in which case the offspring could be sterile. (Meaning, a plant would grow, but wouldn't produce.)

Personally, if I had the time and space for experimenting, I'd do it. I'd think a commercially raised pepper would have been grown in rows, and rows, and rows of the same type - so cross-pollination wouldn't be an issue. And not all hybrids are sterile. So there's a chance it could work out just fine. What do you think?

I bought the store peppers, have pulled the seeds. Drying them and going to attempt to start them to see what happens.

I had seen the references to people doing that online. Most were 4 years old so a little surprised I haven't seen them turn up readily as seed packets.

Newbie here. Why do we have to dry the seeds first? Can't we just stick them in the ground as soon as they come out of the fruit?

Most seeds need a period of dormancy, some need cold, some need dark or light specifically. Some like the Bishop Pine tree require fire. Pretty neat huh? Very Happy
