Store-bought dried peppers--seeds?
Has anyone tried planting seeds from store-bought dried hot peppers? I was making chili this evening (yum!) and tapping the seeds out of the peppers and just found myself staring at those seeds. Are they viable? Are the storebought dried peppers dried in the sun, or in an oven? I suppose the real answer is that it varies, and I'll just have to try.... but it was definitely food for thought.
Re: Store-bought dried peppers--seeds?
I'm not 100% sure, but I'm guessing that they're kiln-dried, and possibly treated with something to reduce/eliminate any funky stuff growing on the peppers (molds/mildew)
It's worth a shot, though -- if you're going to throw them away otherwise, a soak and sticking them in some soil doesn't cost you anything.

You could do a test sprout on a few of the seeds on moist paper towels, just to see if they will germinate at all.

Give it a try, like Odd Duck suggested. When I had my daycare years ago, we planted all kinds of things. It was amazing what would grow and the kids and I all enjoyed those little experiments.
