Yellow Squash Issues
I have grown some Zephyr squash in five gallon buckets and the plants are doing very well with one exception. They seem to have a weak main stem where it enters the dirt. I can only describe them as "floppy." They tended to fall over with hard rain and/or wind. I staked them with bamboo bbq skewers and they seem to be responding pretty well and flowering like crazy. Is there something that I could do in the future to have stronger plants?
Thanks,
G.

Re: Yellow Squash Issues
I use two methods. One is to put a stake in the ground before I plant the squash. Then tie the squash to the stake as it grows. The second method (somethimes I use both methods on the same squash) is to take one of the round tomato cages, turn it upside down and put it on the outside of the pot or on the inside if the pot is big enough. I just let the legs stick up in the air. The upside down tomato cage works real well because as the leaves get big, they lap over the side of the cage and keep the squash upright.
