Vining Yellow Summer Squash?
Hello, I'm new to this forum. Plan to come back and browse some more. I started a square foot garden last year, had good results, and I'm doubling down this year.
One quick question, though. Mel mentions in his book that there are vining summer squash varieties available. I want to grow yellow crookneck or straight neck summer squash vertically. Unfortunately, most seed packets don't indicate what kind of growth habit the plant has. Or more distressingly, when they do tell you the seed packets lie. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I'm going to try the Tromboncino Squash found towards the bottom of this page: http://sampleseeds.com/?page_id=75
It's light green as a summer squash and tan as a winter squash. Never grown them before but recommending by several people on other forums for a vining squash.

this site tells you whether each variety is vining or bush.

Thanks for the replies. I might try that Tromboncino. It looks interesting. I've got a couple of spots picked out for the regular bush type so we'll have plenty this summer.

Re: Vining Yellow Summer Squash?
I posted a similar discussion question asking about summer squash growing habits.
The 2 varieties you refer to yellow crookneck or straight neck summer squash, after much research found that they are likely bush varieties but I have seen mixed descriptions for the yellow crookneck so I am not completely sure about it.
See the following discussion below "squash: vine or bush":

There is some great discussion about the various summer squash varieties available.

Re: Vining Yellow Summer Squash?
Thanks for the link, bullfrogbabe. I'll check out the section in Mel's website about trellising (is that a word?) squash. I trained the tomatoes very easily last year, so a little more effort would be worth it for the squash.

I don't think summer squash are vining plants, especially straight neck. The straight neck usually yields more than the crook neck.

Re: Vining Yellow Summer Squash?
I have never heard of vining summer squash. I love zucchini, crook necks and summer squash. They all grow like big bushes. I am planting mine in one by ones this year to save space.
