Things learned already
1. I will direct-sow onion seeds next year. It takes a really LONG time to transplant them. I quit after 4 squares & have lots more to do.
2. Put the grid in place ASAP for new beds. I had problems with the cats using boxes at first, but since I put the string grid up, they don't mess with it any more. I'm going to turn the chickens loose for a while today & see what they do. This part of the yard is a favorite place to peck & scratch.
I'm sure there will be other lessons as I go.
On the way to church last night we drove past a house that had several boxes in their yard filled with fresh "dirt". They had to be for SFG, they looked like 3' wide, 6' long. I'm going to stop by there when I get a chance & talk to them (and tell them about the forum).

learning the hard way
I didn't have compost mix on hand last year when I re-planted some squares, so I did without. I paid for my laziness the rest of the season.
Just like Mel says: "Throw a trowel full of compost into the square whenever re-planting."
