Progress so far

Here are a few pics of some of my garden. (taken last week) It has been a very strange year - too cool, too hot, too wet, too dry. Oh well, I'll take what I get.

Have a couple of older gardens in another area. Maybe I'll get some pics later for those.

I have tulip bulbs in almost all of the boxes. One in each square. I know I'll have to keep an eye on their reproduction. Don't want to let them take up valuable space for the new plants in the spring. It just brings some color to the yard early on before it's time to plant the veggies.

Thank you. Next year will be easier since I won't have to be building boxes. Wink

Now to keep the varmints out. (racoons and deer) The woods that surrounds my home is obviously occupied. My friends who hunt love my property for that reason. Wish deer season was in the summer and that the coon hunters would ask for permission to hunt here. JK

Your garden looks great! You are lucky, you can grow tulips. It does not freeze deep enough, or at all sometimes, and they won't bloom here.

For the deer: You can plant pumpkins(very prickly) or vining squash around the outside edge, they don't like the prickly stuff.

As far as the hunters, I don't know the rules up there, but, you could put up some posted signs, and a couple signs, hunting by permission only!

We have 10 acres and don't allow hunting, and the deer know it, come Aug 1, the deer will come over to the back 5 acres during the day, only venturing out at night.

Tulips? Have you tried putting the bulbs in the refrigerator over the winter and then planting them as soon as possible in the spring? I force bulbs sometimes this way so that I can have some tulips in the house in the winter. I don't know if this will work - just a thought.

Deer - will follow the squash advice next spring. Too late now.

Found little green critters eating away at my green bean leaves. (sigh) So out came the spray. This is a bad year here for aphids.

The squash is a bush variety and is crowding the isle quite nicely. Oh well, I can just walk the other way.

It's so funny. A week ago I could walk between the potatoes and the squash. Not an option now. I guess I forgot that even bush variety does have a tendency to spread a little.

Harvested my "little finger" carrots from 1 square today. I'm glad I did because 1 of them had split. Oops. They are so tasty. Saving most of them for winter for soups and stew. Have more to harvest that aren't quite ready. 10 survived in that one square. That's quite good considering the intense heat and dryness earlier this summer.
Largest one was about 6 inches. That's quite big for a "little finger". Guess the MM was working just fine. Smile

My brandywines are so tall that the trellis is leaning. Had to tie a rope around the top of the trellis and anchor it to a post. Think I need to get longer rebar for next spring so I can go deeper.

Not taking any credit for the result of my carrots. They were ignored most of the summer except for occasional watering. Might have helped to have some other plants that kind of shaded them. Who knows. Next year might not be the case. One never knows. Haven't even touched the Danvers yet. I think I will wait for a bit longer. My parsnips will wait for a hard freeze. They seem to be sweeter if left until then. My Mom said so back many years ago.

Dug up 4 squares of potatoes yesterday. Kennebec variety. What a nice surprise.

Granted that some are small but those will make a nice supper addition cooked in their skins.

Have 1 more square that isn't quite ready to dig. When I'm all done I'm going to weigh the entire harvest and see if it was worth it. Of course it is. Anything is better than the grocery store potatoes.

Well, this is strange. The first 8 squares produced a total of 17.25 pounds of potatoes. An average of 2+ pounds per square.

Today I dug the last square - this one little square produced 7.5 pounds. They were all very nice sized - no babies. One of the roots had grown about 2 feet horizontally. This square is the one I neglected the most. Maybe that's the secret. JK

I only got a few kennebecs because of family issues so didnt take care of them..but they were soooo goood and went sooo fassst!
