Severe drought... Empty Severe drought...

Post  Josh 6/26/2012, 4:46 pm

We haven't had any rain for a while now, in our local newspaper there is an article about it newspaper article I talked to someone last week who had a traditional garden and he said if it didn't rain this week he was just mowing his garden down.
My SFGs (and the red wiggler worms that live inside the SFGs) are doing really good dispite the drought and high temps, I water them daily, not a lot but a little each day, the extra use of water is not enough to make much of a difference in the water bill.

It's getting really bad here also. Entire yard is crunchy. Weeks without rain and too many days were in the 90's, 5 more days of 90's are forecast starting Thursday. I'm getting tired of daily watering and there is no end in site. If my well gets too stressed my giant pumpkins will be nothing but little gourds. Today there was a 20 acre fire next county over....the first one so far in this area.....the real hot weather is usually July. It's not a fun summer, we've cancelled several llama events, waaay too hot for them to make them go anywhere.

Would switching to drip irrigation help? I have to water daily here in SoCal - I can't even remember the last time it rained. I have drip irrigation set up in my SFG beds and in all of the containers and tubs. I just hook up the main 1/2" line to my hose and turn it on for a few minutes a day (I don't have a timer yet). It uses a lot less water that way than watering by hand, although the boxes retain water so well they sometimes get watered when they don't need it because the containers do. Eventually I'll split the SFG beds into their own line that I can turn off separately.

I'm with you guys, no rain here and none in site and it is in the 90s! We have had a major fire and a few more minor fires in our valley. I did my boxes before I knew about the new way with MM so I water every other day mostly. We all need some rain!

Looking at a week of 90's coming up and not enough rain here in the NE either. I can water my home gardens but the community gardens just have rain barrels that we have to haul water from. Those gardens are going to get stressed real bad.

We've had zero rain or any kind of moisture in I don't know how long. There are fires all along the front range, 3 of them being level 1. Seems to be a daily occurrence for a new one to start just about everyday now. It's been over a 100 now for 5 days in a row Evil or Very Mad

Looks like Florida is hogging all the rain. I am sure they would ship it north if they could.

I do not know, but drip irrigation lines in IL would freeze in the winter but I suppose you could have ones you take down at end of season each year. Ugh.

Josh, did you tell your neighbor this? Proof is in the pudding. You garden looks great btw.

I am in OH just like llama momma and dry is the word! I heard on the news that we are 3.5" below normal and the high tomorrow is projected to be close to 100! Watered everything last night including my newly planted beans (one square each of yellow wax and White Half Runner Mountaineer).

Ditto here in the Kansas City area. At or above 100 the next week and no rain in sight for longer than that. Starting to worry about the corn and soybean crops. My little garden won't feed me for the winter and who knows what prices will do. So many people are affected by this drought. And Colorado could really use some rain about now. All we can do is hope.

Same story here in St. Louis. I had work at 6am this morning so I was out last night before bed giving my new seeds a drink. And before I even go into the house this afternoon after work, I will be giving them another one. We are projected to have several days this week over 100--Cairo, Egypt is cooler than us right now. I hope my new little seeds don't fry Shocked

Same in Western Pa!!! It has been like August here and no rain for 2 weeks so things are VERY dry here and I try to water as late as possible in several evenings.

Have noticed several local gardens that seem to be struggling so I am glad to have Mels mix as the vermiculite and peat moss seem to soak up a lot of moisture which old style gardens do not have.

I've been buying seeds from Native Seeds Search. They specialize in native seeds usually planted in Arid regions. So here in PA I have been gardening like I live in the Southwest, with good results. I was thinking if PA is feeling like the Desert Southwest then how does the Desert Southwest feel? Then I look on the news and see they are on fire. affraid

We're not at your level of seriousness Rooster, but we, meaning all of S.E. Indiana, Northern KY, portion of Ohio are under a Red Flag Alert with very low humidity, winds, and 100 degree heat. Won't take much to cause raging fires around here...

Those are pretty much the conditions here. All it takes is one careless individual or lightning strike and you've got big problems. Hope you get some moisture soon. Hard to believe some states are flooding while we can't get a drop.

I water my SFGs with this kind of sprinkler, it works pretty good for me, can pretty much reach the entire garden area with it.

My poor plants look like they have simply been put in the oven. We live in western Kansas and have had a week of temps over 100 degrees, ZERO rain and the forecast is more for the next 10 or so days. It is a strange thing. My boxes are moist and the bottom 1/3 of my garden looks ok, but the top 2/3 is simply dying. I am not sure I can keep it all alive. The wind is blowing 25-30 miles and the heat is merciless. I am so sorry for our neighbors in Colorado and other states as well who are suffering from the wildfires. I pray you all remain safe and we all get rain soon!

Heat was also up to 108 today in Missouri. My seeds are just starting to sprout but I fear for them! It's supposed to stay in the 100s the rest of the week. Despite that, I've been hearing people setting off their fireworks anyway. Wish I could tell them off Evil or Very Mad

How about some type of shade cloth for those way way up there in temps! I don't know much about shade cloths but it may help!

We have had so many fires all over our state. One area (not very close
to me) lost 12 plus homes. Not sure if the big fire that is affecting
my air quality is out or not. It was contained a few days ago so I am
assuming it is. Our air quality looks better than it feels on the
lungs. We reached 100 today I think. I can't even begin to think of
you people with 108! And then flooding in other places!

Wow Rooster, you sure need some major rain for those fires! Those who are flooding send some of it to the rest of us!

Hope I am not out of line here but we could all use some prayers!

I have to add something to my last post. I am such a ninny! I have not been following the news for awhile, just tiny bits and pieces here and there. I had no idea of the extent of the fires in Colorado Rooster! I still don't know the extent because as soon as I saw 357 homes have been lost to just one of the fires, I had to log back on! I am so sorry with what you are going through and all the others going through with all their flooding!

You lot neeed to build a pipe line to the UK thousands of people have been flooded out their homes over the last couple fo days .

In our hill top , almost coastal location we have had nearly a years rain of 44 inches in less than six months .

Most crops locally are a good month behind . Mid may strawberries have only just started to form their fruits and not many at that either .
