Pepper problem Empty Pepper problem

I planted transplants of sweet green peppers. They were doing nicely and blooming. Yesterday I found a small pepper - about 2 inches long. Okay, this morning it was laying on the ground - no sign of any varmint chewing on it. It was a clean stem like maybe it had just been cut. There was some blackened flesh near the stem. When I opened it up the inside seemed normal. Okay, anyone - what could it be? (as I head for the cayenne pepper)

No, sorry, I didn't. I am going to keep an eye on them and see if I notice any other issues. Tonight when I checked I didn't see anything unusual.
