I am trying sweet potatoes for the first time in 5a, but we have a relatively high number of GDD or Growing Degree Days so I am hoping for some good results.

We have plenty of GGDs but no slips yet...
I ordered our sweet potato slips from Sandhills Conservancy way early in the year. I got a letter from them saying they had received payment and they cashed my check. They said that since they were in Iowa, that they wouldn't be ready to ship til the end of May. I'm thinking they should be in any day now. Any extra positive vibes anyone wants to send out to get em to Oklahoma any faster would be appreciated. Really want to get them in the ground. We ordered all heirloom varieties that are orange to red. I don't know why I think so, but it has always seemed to me that the darker the color, the sweeter the potato. Must be my Louisiana heritage. My grandmother always had baked sweet potatoes sitting in a bowl on top of the stove when we were little. That was what we got for snacks. "Take an ol' cold tater and wait." LOL! We loved 'em!

I ordered form Sandhills too. They said by the 20th. I think lots of folks order way back last yr. and I didn't order til the first of this yr., so, I presume it's first come basis.
I've been growing the 'grocery store' variety, just finished last yrs. crop. I have ordered several to try. 1 is supposed to compare to/could be a subsitute for a irish potato, Sumor. I rush to the mail each day, impatiently waiting. Hoping to still have room in the garden when they finally arrive!
